Looking at him, Finnian seemed so utterly lost that it was hard for anyone to muster the will to scold him.
Amara sighed, rummaged for some fever medicine, and handed him a glass of water. "Here, take this."
She knew Finnian was too out of it to respond, so she carefully pried his mouth open and slipped the fever reducer in, following it up with some water.
Thankfully, he was compliant, swallowing the medicine and then looking up at her. He looked just like a little abandoned puppy, the kind that tugged at your heartstrings.
Amara turned away, trying not to look at him any longer, worried that her resolve might crumble if she did.
She was contemplating whether to call the Everly family member to come pick him up when suddenly a pair of arms wrapped around her from behind, clutching her waist.
Startled, she tried to pry his hands away. "Let go of me."
Finnian pressed against her back, his face nuzzling into her neck, murmuring something she couldn't quite catch.
His warm breath tickled her neck, making Amara feel both embarrassed and flustered.
Gritting her teeth, she pinched his arm sharply. "Let go now!"
Apparently, the pinch did the trick, as Finnian finally released her, allowing Amara to slip away.
Seeing him still sitting quietly on the couch, she sighed again and fetched a blanket.
"You can sleep here for the night. Just make sure you're gone by morning."
She didn't want Finnian staying, but he seemed too out of it to understand her, and there was no way she was going to sleep outside somewhere while he stayed in her place. So, she decided to make do for the night.
As she set the blanket down, Finnian grabbed her wrist.
