Chapter 237 A Daughter
The crowd turned their heads towards the entrance.
Lewis strode in, approached Josephine, and stood before her.
Seeing him defending Josephine, Nancy’s anger, which had not yet subsided, surged even higher.
“Lewis, she’s just a mute! Is it worth it for you to go against me non-stop for this mute?”
Nancy’s voice was loud and sharp, making Josephine’s ears ache.
Lewis met Nancy’s gaze, and his eyes were indifferent. The reflections in his pitch-black pupils exuded a coldness that sent shivers down Nancy’s spine.
Lewis said, “I’m not going against you. You’re the one who’s going against me. Don’t tell me you still haven’t realized that by now.”
Nancy snapped to her senses, and anger resurfaced on her face. “I’m going against you? I’m doing this for your own good! Why can’t you appreciate my well-meaning intentions?”
“Hah, well-meaning intentions.”
His mocking laughter pierced Nancy’s ears. It sounded particularly grating.
“If you genuinely want what’s best for me, please refrain from meddling in my affairs. I can’t always comprehend your so-called well-intentioned actions.”
Lewis’ tone took on a menacing edge, provoking a surge of anger within Nancy. “What do you mean? Are you insinuating rebellion?”
“Why would I rebel?” His tone changed, and he retorted, “Besides being my mother, what else
you have that’s worth for me to rebel against?”
do
“You…”
Nancy was speechless. She glared at Lewis fiercely. If looks could kill, Lewis would have been torn apart by now.
“Great, Lewis. I’ve raised you for nothing all these years. For the sake of this mute, you’re abandoning even your own mother. What a filial son you are.”
Expressionless, Lewis looked at her as if observing a clown. He allowed her to rant and rave.
Nancy found it ridiculous. She grabbed her bag from the sofa, and her gaze swept over Lewis before landing on Josephine’s face. She then sarcastically remarked through gritted teeth, Such a filial son.”
Her venomous gaze made Josephine instinctively lower her head.

Nancy left the villa in a fit of anger, and even from the sound of her footsteps, it was evident that her anger was at its peak.
After Nancy left, Lewis glanced at the two maids watching the spectacle. The two immediately lowered their heads and quickly retreated.
Josephine tugged at his sleeve, and Lewis turned to look at her.
Josephine signed, “Did we get divorced?”
Lewis lowered his gaze and stared at her, his voice deep, “You believe whatever others say, but you never believe me, do you?”
Josephine’s eyelids twitched, and she hurriedly shook her head before signing, “I believe you. I really do.”
Only then did his cold expression soften ever so slightly. His gaze fell on Josephine’s damp attire. “Why haven’t you changed into dry clothes?”
Josephine pursed her lips and signed, “I’ll go change now.”
With that, she walked past Lewis and headed upstairs.
Lewis tugged at his tie. Feeling it was in the way, he pulled it off and casually threw it on the sofa. He took out a cigarette, lit it, and sat down on the sofa. Tilting his head back, he blew out a long trail of smoke.
Josephine came back down after changing her clothes. She saw him lying on the sofa in a relaxed manner. He held a cigarette in one hand while the other rested atop the sofa’s headrest.
His relaxed fingers looked even more slender and beautiful than usual.
Josephine approached him, lowering her head as she gazed at him.
Flicking away the cigarette, he hooked his arm around Josephine’s waist and pulled her closer.
Josephine stumbled and fell into his embrace. She instinctively grabbed onto his shoulders.
He reached out a hand and gently caressed Josephine’s face, his gaze fixed on her, but it seemed somewhat unfocused.
“Will you forget about me?”
His voice was soft as if he was murmuring to himself instead of asking her a question.
However, those few words weighed heavily on Josephine’s heart. Suddenly, she felt somewhat suffocated.
His profound gaze made Josephine almost believe that he loved her deeply. Yet, in her mind, all she could think of was the statement released by the Alvarez Corp today. Every word in the statement warned her that Lewis didn’t love her.
Josephine slowly loosened her grip on his fingers and raised her hand to sign before him. “I
won’t.”
Lewis redirected his gaze to her fingers.
Josephine continued, “I will never forget you.”
That was because her entire life was filled with his presence. He had been in her life since she was five years old. How could she forget him?
She might forget about Dr. Halliday, Quintin, Avery, and the rest, but she would never forget him.
Josephine didn’t know whether this was a stroke of luck or a source of sorrow.
It felt as though fate had cursed her. In the past, she had only him, and it appeared that in the future, all she would have left was him as well.
Lewis held her hand and gently caressed it before asking, “Did you take your medicine?”
Josephine nodded.
“You must take your medicine on time…” He paused, glancing at his wristwatch. The day was almost over.
It was useless now.
Josephine nodded again. She had been taking so much medication lately. Dr. Halliday visited today and made her take various medications.
In Josephine’s memory, she had never taken so much medicine before. She always had good. health and could even run after Lewis for long distances.
She would buy him his favorite food, wash the clothes that couldn’t be machine-washed, and even clean the entire house. The mansion was so huge, yet she did all the cleaning herself. Yet why did she feel exhausted even just going up the stairs now?
Lewis asked, “Is your leg still hurting today?”
Josephine nodded slightly, indicating that it still hurt a little.
Lewis fell silent for a moment and said, “When you get better, let’s have a daughter.”
