Sarcasm. Ridicule.
Whitney remembered every single word Noel had thrown at her that day.
He had assumed he could predict everything, control every outcome. How overly confident of him.
She had told him the break up just to watch him eat his words.
But after hearing her, Noel didn't show the slightest bit of surprise.
Watching her face light up with smug satisfaction, he merely replied, "When the time comes, I'll congratulate you."
Whitney said, "Oh, you will. Trust me, I'll make sure you say 'congratulations' loud and clear."
With confidence beaming from her eyes, Whitney didn't bother mentioning her engagement with Damian again.
She had already reached an agreement with him, and that was all that mattered.
She didn't need to prove anything more. When the day finally arrived, Noel would have to bow his head, forced to eat every word he had once spoken and apologize to her.
…
The next day around noon, Whitney returned to the Spencer residence, carrying a bottle of Westley's favorite wine.
In the living room, Rebecca was flipping through the latest fashion magazine and gave her a cold glance as she walked in. "Whenever you come home, it's never for anything good."
Whitney heard her but didn't bother responding.
She took the bottle of wine and headed straight to the study on the second floor.
When she opened the door, Westley had just finished a business call.
Westley smiled warmly as he glanced up from his desk, his tone softening at the sight of his daughter. "Whit? It's been a while since you came home."
Whitney replied, holding up the bottle. "I've been busy lately. Here's your favorite wine."
She hadn't yet told him about her resignation from Howard Group. Compared to breaking off her engagement, it was trivial.
The two of them chatted casually, catching up on recent events, both of them in high spirits.
Westley said, sipping his tea. "Bring Damian with you on your next visit. You two are getting married soon. Don't keep showing up alone."
Whitney paused for a few seconds, feeling a twinge of nervousness before she finally spoke up. "Dad, Damian and I have decided to break up. He's already agreed to end the engagement."
Westley froze mid-sip, his brows knitting tightly. "What did you just say?"
Whitney spoke calmly, her voice steady as she explained, "It's all settled. Damian will handle things with the Howards. When the time comes, all you'll need to do is visit them to formally annul the engagement."
Everyone in the room froze, stunned by her revelation.
After a moment, Westley collected himself. "Who was it?"
Whitney said firmly, "Who it was doesn't matter. The point is, he cheated on me. I won't marry a man who betrayed me."
Westley waved a hand dismissively, scoffing. "You're set to be the future Mrs. Howard, the wife of Howard Group's CEO. You need to think big. So, he cheated. But so what? Men all have their dalliances. As long as he didn't end the engagement and still sees you as his rightful wife, what does it matter? Do you think those other women can hold a candle to you?"
He took a deep breath and continued trying to reason with her, "If you want to achieve great things, you need to learn to tolerate certain things. What matters most to you? Status! Elijah approves of you, accepts you as his granddaughter-in-law, and that's enough. Those other women are nothing in comparison."
As she listened to her father, Whitney was utterly stunned.
Was this the same man who had once patiently taught her life principles, instilled values, and encouraged her to stand firm in her beliefs?
In that moment, the image of her father, her once-respected, beloved father, shattered before her eyes.
Whitney's voice shook with disbelief as she asked, "So, Dad, does that mean that as long as it benefits the Spencers, you're willing to sacrifice everything about me?"
Westley's tone was firm, almost cold, as he replied, "That's the way it should be! I raised you. What's wrong with expecting a little loyalty in return?"
Whitney took a step back, disappointment clouding her gaze.
Finally, with a resolute voice, she declared, "I will repay you for raising me, but as for marrying Damian, that is something I will never do.
