With a deliberate motion, I picked up the check and, under her stare, tore it into small pieces, scattering them on the ground. Smiling, I said, “Sorry to disappoint you, but I don’t respond well to threats or bribes.”
I had nothing to lose, so what was there to fear? The Harris family still had a reputation to uphold. I refused to believe that they could make me, a living, breathing person, disappear without a trace.
Skylar, seething with rage, pointed a trembling finger at me. “You! Don’t be ungrateful!”
I responded with a detached indifference, “Kimberly Harris is definitely the daughter you’ve raised. You two sound mactly alike. Could you possibly be more creative? It’s been done to death!”
Then, reaching into my bag. I pulled out a $100 bill and slapped it down in front of Skylar. Mocking her, I said, “As if no one else has money. Take this and keep your daughter out of my business!”
With that, I left her standing there, ignoring the fury etched on her face as I turned on my heel and walked away.
Humiliation wasn’t an exclusive privilege of the wealthy.
As soon as I stepped out, Elissa approached, her face etched with concern.. “What happened? Do you know her?”
1 grasped Elissa’s arm and guided her toward the elevator, explaining as we walked. “Kimberly Harris’s mother. She came to defend her precious daughter and tried to bully me into a divorce.”
Elissa was livid, nearly turning back to confront Skylar. She cursed, “Those mother daughter troublemakers–one’s
worse than the other.”
Unexpectedly, Skylar, who wasn’t far behind, heard every word. Her face contorted with anger as she shouted, “Excuse
me?!
ssa, unshaken, smirked. “Birds of a feather, huh? How else could someone like Kimberly Harris be your pride and joy? Maybe your biological daughter disappeared all these years because she couldn’t stand your so–called values and found you utterly embarrassing

No one ever bested Elissa in an argument. Skylar’s face flushed an angry scarlet. She strode forward, arm raised to strike Elisse, but Flissa was quicker
With a disdainful glance, Elissa dodged and remarked, “Don’t touch me, I’ve got a cleanliness issue. Besides, I wouldn’t

want to push you too far. I’m afraid you’d break down.”
Skylar, likely pampered after marrying into the prestigious Harris family, had clearly never experienced such treatment. Her chest heaved violently as she glared daggers at Elissa. “Do you have any idea who I am? How dare you insult me
like this!”
Elissa retorted with a smirk, “You call that an insult? I could carve one on your tombstone if you really want one!”
With that, Elissa pulled me into the arriving elevator, leaving behind a fuming Skylar whose face had turned an array of mixed colors.
As the elevator doors closed, Elissa raised an eyebrow. “Feeling any better?”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “Maybe a little.”
Elissa patted my head, her gesture soothing as if I were a child in need of comfort. “That’s the spirit! Come on, grab some food. I’ll treat you to the spaghetti from that place behind the school.”
I smiled. “Sure, I haven’t had that in ages. Thanks, Elissa.”
let’s go
Just mentioning that restaurant made my mouth water. It was an old–fashioned place, and its food was nothing short of amazing.
Just as we got into the car, the agent came running out, panting. “Ms. Royston, Miss. Wilson, wait a moment. The owner of the place you saw yesterday morning has responded. They said they can lower the rent.”
Elissa turned, curiosity piqued. “Which one?”
“The one in the office building across the street,” the agent said, pointing to the imposing structure just across the
road.
The rent there was pricier than other locations, and although Elissa and I were quite taken with it, we had dismissed it as too costly.
After sharing a quick glance with me, Elissa shook her head. “Forget it. They can’t lower it enough to make it feasible for us. We’re short on funds right now.”
“They’re lowering it to this amount.” The agent held up a few fingers, indicating a number. “The owner mentioned that during a visit to the church, they were told to perform a good deed every day, so they’re offering a lower price.”
Elissa and I stared at each other, taken aback by this superstitious yet fortuitous turn of events.
Given our previous experience, Elissa remained cautious. “We’re not going to run into another lunatic like earlier, are
we?”
The agent chuckled nervously. “No, no. This owner is extremely busy. Even the contract will be sent by courier. There’s no chance of a repeat of today’s events.”
“Do you want it?” he added, hopeful. “If so, Til draw up the contract.”
