Claire heard Brian's roar, and her body trembled slightly, but she quickly steadied herself.
Irene had woken up, and soon she would be exonerated from the murder charge.
Now, it wasn't Claire who should be afraid.
It was Vanessa.
And Ethan, Vincent, Brian—all those who had wronged her.
She was intensely curious about the expressions they would have once the truth was revealed.
Claire straightened her back, feeling more confident than ever before.
A faint, cold smile played on her lips as she looked at him mockingly.
When Brian met her calm gaze, his heart skipped a beat.
In that moment, he realized Claire had changed.
Her entire demeanor had undergone a radical transformation, inside and out.
In the past, Claire would tremble like a mouse before a cat whenever she saw him.
But now, she not only dared to meet his eyes but also looked at him with a mocking gaze, as if he were a complete failure.
She stood beside the hospital bed, holding the hand of the frail Irene.
Both women were equally emaciated, their complexions sallow, and even the bruises on their necks were eerily similar.
For a fleeting moment, Brian felt an uncanny sense of empathy between Claire and Irene.
A creeping fear spread through him; he dared not ponder why he was afraid or what he was truly afraid of.
It seemed that once he figured it all out, he would fall into an abyss from which there was no return.
Brian shifted his gaze away from Claire, suppressing a flood of emotions, and instructed the doctor to examine Irene.
The room fell into a deathly silence.
Ethan asked with concern, "Vanessa, what's wrong? You look unwell."
Vanessa twisted her hands nervously, her eyes darting around, stammering, "I-I suddenly don't feel very well."
Vincent stepped forward, gently supporting her, "If you're not feeling well, let me take you to see a doctor."
With that, he started to lead Vanessa away.
"Stop!" Claire's sharp command startled both Vanessa and Vincent.
Vincent frowned in displeasure and was about to reprimand Claire when she interrupted with a cold expression.
"There's a doctor right here. Taking her outside means waiting in line and registering—a lot of hassle."
Her words left Vincent speechless.
Though he disliked Claire's assertive tone, he couldn't deny the logic in her reasoning.
