Vincent was still under the effects of anesthesia, his body trapped in a deep, unconscious state. Despite this, his brow remained furrowed, as if even in his slumber, he was enduring an indescribable agony.
Ethan, after receiving emergency treatment, had also drifted into a deep sleep.
Brian watched as the medical staff wheeled both men into the hospital room, his mood overshadowed by a deep gloom.
It seemed that ever since Claire had disappeared, misfortune had been dogging those who had wronged her, one after the other.
Reflecting on how Claire wasn't the true culprit behind Irene’s vegetative state, and remembering the hardships Claire had endured during her five years in prison, Brian’s heart ached profoundly.
Was this karma?
The harm they had inflicted on Claire had finally come back to haunt them.
Brian lingered outside the hospital room for a long time before dragging his heavy steps away. Initially, he intended to return to his own room. However, recalling Irene's earlier manic state, he couldn’t shake off his unease. So, he turned around and entered Irene’s room instead.
Irene was already lying on her bed, but she wasn’t asleep. Since waking from her vegetative state, she had been reluctant to close her eyes, having missed out on five years of the world. She feared that if she closed them again, she might revert to her previous ghost-like existence.
When Brian entered, he saw Irene staring wide-eyed out the window.
“Irene,” he called softly, but she didn’t react at all.
With a sigh, Brian approached her, speaking gently, “Irene, your brother is here to see you. Aren’t you happy?”
Happy?
A mocking smile played on Irene’s lips. If he truly cared for her as a sister, he wouldn’t defend Vanessa. Despite knowing how much she had suffered and how Claire had been dragged into five years of unjust imprisonment, he, as her own brother, seemed reluctant to pursue the truth.
