Aberdeen was trembling with rage upon hearing Lucas Foster's words. She struck him hard with her cane. "Shut up! This mess wouldn't have happened if you hadn't married someone so disgraceful!"
"Your wife has tormented my granddaughter-in-law to no end, and yet you stand here trying to smooth things over!"
Lucas felt utterly humiliated being reprimanded by his own mother in front of everyone.
He gritted his teeth, suppressing his anger, and walked to the door of the banquet hall, attempting to leave.
But the door was locked tight and wouldn't budge.
"Assistant Liam, open the door!" Lucas commanded, his voice carrying an edge of authority that brooked no refusal.
Liam maintained a polite smile, but his tone was firm. "If the chairman doesn't want Mr. Foster to be upset, he should wait patiently here."
Lucas was infuriated. "Do you dare defy me? Do you believe I won't fire you?"
Liam's smile remained. "I believe you, sir. But for now, you should wait."
Lucas clenched his fists in frustration, but there was nothing he could do.
The guests watched in silent fear, stunned that Liam would ignore the chairman's orders. The tension in the room was palpable, making it hard to breathe.
Yvonne Smith sat on the floor, her eyes vacant.
Several of the socialites had been slapped by their husbands, their faces bruised, but they dared not complain. They only hoped that when Sean Foster returned, he might show them some mercy upon seeing their plight.
...
Sean cradled Claire Linwood in his arms as he walked through the long hotel corridor.
Claire leaned against his broad chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, which gave her an unprecedented sense of security.
As they turned a corner, an unwelcome voice reached Claire's ears. "Mr. Foster, where are you off to?"
Brian Cole stood not far away, sporting a sycophantic smile.
Despite his usual arrogance, Brian had to humble himself in front of Sean.
Beside Brian, Vanessa Linwood stared at Sean, momentarily entranced.
Sean glanced at the two of them, his gaze lingering on the torn embroidery in Vanessa's hand. His eyes narrowed slightly.
He could feel Claire tense up in his arms. Although he didn't know the full story, he could infer from the details that Brian and Vanessa were somehow responsible for Claire's current state.
