Scarlet shook out her stinging hand and sneered, “Vincent, don’t be so ungrateful. Don’t forget, we’re both in this mess together. Even if you help Claire now, don’t expect her to thank you for it.”

Vincent slowly turned to look at Claire.

When his gaze met Claire’s, filled with nothing but bitter resentment, his heart clenched painfully, as if an invisible hand was twisting it tighter and tighter.

His eyes brimmed with regret and longing. “Claire, I only tried to take you away because I love you so much. Please, don’t hate me. I swear, if you choose to be with me, I’ll never hurt you again.”

His voice trembled with pleading, like a child desperate for forgiveness after doing something wrong.

Claire let out a cold, mocking laugh. “How pathetic,” she scoffed, her eyes dripping with contempt.

Her reaction cut Vincent deeply.

Fuming, he wheeled himself over to the cage and gritted out, “Claire, what do you even want from me? I’m like this—all because of you. Don’t think I don’t know the truth. If it wasn’t for you, my legs wouldn’t be broken. It must’ve been Sean who did this to me—he’s the one who ruined me!”

He pressed on bitterly, “I lost my legs for you, but I never once hated you for it. And you? You spent five years in prison—so what? You’re still whole, aren’t you? Not missing any limbs. How is your suffering worse than mine? Even if I misunderstood you and accidentally sent you to jail, losing my legs more than repaid that debt.”

“We were so close in the orphanage. You used to be so sweet and kind. Now you nitpick every little thing. Do you even realize how insufferable you’ve become?”

Vincent finally spat out all his pent-up resentment.

Claire’s smile turned icier still.
