When he first heard that his own sister had been abandoned in the mountains, left at the mercy of the men there, he began to hate Claire with a burning intensity.
Ever since then, the whole family—mother, father, and son—had been waiting for the perfect moment to take revenge on Claire.
Now, at last, their chance had come.
The three of them had just received news of Vanessa’s death.
It was Scarlet who’d told them, even providing the address.
After hanging up, Scarlet was practically gleeful.
Vincent, however, frowned. “Why did you call them here?”
“Why? So they can finally teach Claire a lesson she’ll never forget. Isn’t it obvious?”
Vincent’s voice was tense with panic. “Are you out of your mind? They’ll kill her.”
Scarlet sneered. “No, you’re wrong. They won’t let Claire die so quickly. They’ll make sure she suffers first. I want her to be trapped in a living hell—begging for death, but unable to die. I’m going to record every second of her misery and post it online for the whole country to watch. Everyone will see what happens to people like her.”
“You’re insane. Aren’t you afraid of Sean coming for you? That man is a monster.”
Scarlet waved off his concern, her eyes cold. “Revenge? Please. The moment I kidnapped Claire, I stopped caring about Sean’s threats.”
She laughed bitterly. “At first, I thought maybe I could seduce that bastard, get something out of him for myself. But he humiliated me—forced me to eat so much cake I got fat and ended up with diabetes. Now I’ve lost everything. What’s left for me to fear?”
“If anyone should be afraid now, it’s Sean. I’d love to see his face when he finds out Claire has disappeared—see him completely fall apart.”
Scarlet strode over to where Claire lay.
Claire was unconscious, feverish, her wounds infected. Her face was flushed, lips cracked and dry—every breath a struggle.
Vincent watched, his heart twisting with pity.
