Vanessa’s face was alight with smug satisfaction as she glanced over at her biological mother, Sophia.
“Mom, once I get her kidney, will I finally be okay?”
Dressed in scrubs and preparing to operate on her own daughter, Sophia gently stroked Vanessa’s hair with motherly affection.
“Of course, sweetheart. As long as I’m here, you have nothing to worry about. You’ll be healthy again in no time.”
Vanessa’s lips curled into a blissful smile, but a flicker of worry soon clouded her expression.
“Mom, what if she goes to the police after we forcefully take her kidney?”
Sophia stroked her head reassuringly. “Don’t be afraid. Once we have her kidney, Nathan—that idiot—will send her far away, across the border. No one will ever be able to find her. Even if something happens to her, no one will be able to trace it back to us.”
At this, Vanessa finally relaxed.
As the anesthetic started to take effect, Vanessa’s eyelids grew heavy. She slowly drifted into unconsciousness.
Sophia picked up the scalpel and walked over to Claire.
Behind her surgical mask, her lips twisted into a malicious smile.
“All of this is your fault, you wretched girl. If it weren’t for you, Adah wouldn’t have taken her anger out on my daughter. She’s suffered at Adah’s hands for over a decade because of you.”
“Tonight, I’m going to get justice for my child.”
The cold blade gleamed under the harsh operating room lights, inching ever closer to Claire.
Sophia didn’t even bother to disinfect Claire’s skin; she was ready to cut her open and take the kidney without a second thought.
As the scalpel hovered just over Claire’s body, Sophia’s eyes burned with anticipation.
But just as the blade was about to break the skin, the operating room doors were suddenly slammed open from the outside.
A squad of police officers burst in, guns drawn.
“Freeze! Drop the scalpel and put your hands up!”
With those crimes stacked together, Sophia was looking at the death penalty.
Sophia could never have imagined things would unravel like this.
“N-no, it’s not true! You can’t just accuse me without evidence—!”
“We’ll see what you have to say at the station. Take her away.”
Sophia and every medical staff member involved in the attempted organ theft were arrested on the spot.
Even Vanessa, still unconscious on the operating table, was wheeled out in custody.
As they left the operating room, Sophia saw Nathan—her cruel, foolish accomplice—already handcuffed and surrounded by police.
She knew, with a sinking heart, that it was all over.
