After hearing Nathan's words, May was so furious that she trembled all over.
As biological parents, failing to take care of their daughter to the point where she went missing at birth was a severe dereliction of their duties. They might find solace by adopting another daughter, but what about Miss Claire?
She ended up in an orphanage, enduring untold hardships until she turned fifteen. When she finally returned home, hoping for a stable life, those three years were tumultuous. Despite managing to get into an elite university, there wasn't even a celebratory dinner, and she was falsely accused and thrown into prison.
Upon release, she was emaciated, her limbs frail, a testament to the abuse she suffered behind bars. Just as she was starting to recover, she had to face another round of torment from this family of tormentors.
Vanessa usually scoffed at nourishing soup, claiming it was just bird spit and her least favorite dish. Yet now, with only one bowl left, she wanted to give it to Miss Claire, and suddenly Vanessa was eager to snatch it away. May didn't believe that Mr. and Mrs. Linwood weren't aware of Vanessa's distaste for the soup. They clearly knew but still chose to favor Vanessa over Claire, even though Claire had lost a finger and was lying in the hospital.
Claire must have had the worst luck imaginable to be born into the Linwood family. May had a daughter of her own, and she couldn't fathom the heartbreak if her child were treated like this.
The sympathy she felt for Claire and the anger towards the Linwood family surged through her. She wanted nothing more than to dump the scalding contents of the thermos onto Nathan's arrogant face. But her daughter needed the money for school, and she needed this job with the Linwood family, so May suppressed her indignation.
Vanessa's eyes gleamed with malice, a smug smile she couldn't hide. She didn't care for the soup, but she would rather let it go to waste than allow Claire a single sip. May cared for Claire, didn't she? Vanessa would make sure this old woman lost her job because of Claire, forcing her to choose between her own needs and Claire's well-being.
