With a hint of sarcasm, she said, "So, you knew all along. During those four years at Crestwood, I didn’t receive a single penny for living expenses!"
Gilbert's face fell. Caroline had come and spilled the beans about this!
Why would she do that?
He couldn't wrap his head around it.
The mess she had created was swept under the rug, all for the sake of his older brother. And yet, she went and exposed it herself?
What good would that do her?
But now wasn’t the time to ponder her motives.
"This thing..." Gilbert was already flustered. "Yes, I did know about it..."
He admitted it!
"And so?"
Sherilyn's eyes turned icy, then suddenly, she laughed.
"You knew... and yet all this time, you never breathed a word of it to me! How did you manage that, huh?"
Her words were a barrage of accusations.
"Did you think, so what if I didn’t get a dime? I mean, look at me," she pointed to herself.
"I'm not dead, am I? I'm standing right here, perfectly fine! So..."
Her heart clenched, words choked in her throat.
"So, it's no big deal? Just let bygones be bygones?"
"No..." Gilbert frowned deeply, trying to explain. "It's because..."
"Because you want to protect Caroline, right?"
Sherilyn chuckled derisively, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
She wasn't just laughing at him—she was laughing at herself.
"You know how I convinced myself? Because you were good to me! And to Jenna!"
"Yes, I was!" Gilbert attempted to take her hand.
"I kept telling myself that you didn’t know about it. If you did, you wouldn’t just stand by and do nothing!"
Sherilyn stepped back, evading his touch.
