"Got it, Grandpa."
Rebecca stepped outside and nearly bumped into Francis.
"Hey... are you thirsty?" She gestured towards the kitchen. "I can grab you a soda or something."
"Sure," Francis nodded, trailing after her.
Rebecca opened the fridge and handed him a cold bottle of water. "So, what brings you here today?"
Francis twisted the cap off and took a sip. "Promise you won't get mad if I tell you?"
"What’s going on?" Rebecca furrowed her brow. "What did you do?"
"Don’t get me wrong," Francis quickly added. "I just... I'm friends with your boss. He mentioned you took the afternoon off, and I figured you might have gone to the hospital."
"You're friends with my boss?" Rebecca caught onto that detail, a lightbulb going off in her mind. Could it be...?
"When I got the job at the company, was it because of you...?"
Francis nodded, confirming her suspicion.
He hadn't planned on revealing this, but if it meant she’d understand his intentions, it was worth it.
"I did put in a good word."
Rebecca fell silent, processing his confession.
No wonder. She had been puzzled at first, landing a spot at such a prestigious design firm so smoothly.
She gazed at Francis, realizing he had been looking out for her all along.
Fearing he might’ve upset her, Francis quickly added, "Even though I spoke to your boss, your skills got you the job. You've been doing great work there."
"Well, I could ignore her," Francis replied. "But if I left now, your grandpa might worry. Come on."
"Where are we going?" Rebecca asked, blinking in surprise.
"Show me your room," Francis said, glancing around. "You grew up here, right? You must have a room."
"Yeah," Rebecca nodded, pointing upstairs. "Second door on the left."
A small smile played on her lips. "It’s still there. Grandpa never changed it, and he even has someone clean it regularly."
"That's wonderful." Francis gently placed a hand on her head, tousling her hair.
"In this world, you're not alone. Even when things get really tough, your grandpa always has your back."
Rebecca felt a lump in her throat, but she smiled, tilting her head. "Yeah."
