"Ha-ha. Yes!"
Jenna was over the moon, curling up into a little ball, snuggling close to her mom.
Meanwhile, Gilbert was on the verge of blowing up Sherilyn's phone!
He had arrived at the dance studio at 6 o'clock sharp to pick up Sherilyn, as they had agreed. But, her phone was unreachable, and she hadn't replied to any of his messages.
What was going on?
Gilbert furrowed his brows, puzzled.
Just then, he spotted Rebecca stepping out.
"Rebecca!" Gilbert quickly intercepted her, "Hey, has Sherilyn not left yet?"
"Sherilyn?" Rebecca looked surprised, "Oh, she left nearly an hour ago."
Really?
Gilbert's attempt to maintain a smile faltered, "Do you know where she went?"
"No clue, she didn't say," Rebecca shrugged.
"Thanks."
"No problem."
As Rebecca left, Gilbert's handsome face turned grim. Sherilyn had already left? Where to?
Had something happened? Why wasn't she answering her phone?
If something had come up suddenly, shouldn't she have at least informed him?
Glancing at his watch, he noted another ten minutes had passed... Did she even remember their date tonight?
His gaze darkening, Gilbert picked up his phone again to try Sherilyn's number.
Unsurprisingly, there was no answer.
Suppressing his growing irritation, he sent her another message.
[Where are you? Is everything okay? Should I come pick you up?]
Again, his message vanished into the void.
The night grew deeper.
Gilbert sat in his car, constantly glancing at his phone to check for any missed calls or unread messages.
Humph!
He was seething, instinctively reaching for a cigarette to calm his nerves.
Instead, his fingers found a box of throat lozenges.
—Sherilyn disliked his smoking habit and had asked him to quit.
There were 97 missed calls!
And over 99 unread messages!
All from Gilbert!
Oh no!
Sherilyn's heart raced, remembering their date tonight.
"Sophia, please look after Jenna for me. Something's come up, I've got to go!"
"Uh, sure."
As Sherilyn dashed out, she dialed Gilbert's number.
He answered instantly, his voice a mix of irritation and worry, "Sherilyn? Is that you? Where are you? Are you alright?"
Was he worried about her? Sherilyn paused for a second before replying, "Yes, I'm fine."
Hearing her voice, Gilbert felt a huge relief wash over him, the tension in his mind finally easing.
But then, a wave of bitterness and resentment followed.
"Where did you run off to? What could possibly be more important to you than our date?"
“More important than me?” He thought.
