Chapter 209
Even though Anathea had tried again and again to drill it into herself to be cold–hearted, the moment she heard Cyrus‘ words, her heart jolted as she hurried toward Xander’s room.
The moment she saw Xander lying weakly in bed, Anathea tensed up and quickly moved to check on him.
Though dazed with fever, Xander seemed to sense that his mother was near. He forced his eyes open.
When he saw Anathea, his eyes welled up with tears. His voice had gone hoarse and faint as he struggled to speak. “Mom…” That one word tugged at Anathea’s heart, and a flicker of emotion passed through her eyes.
“W–what should we do? He doesn’t look well. Could it be something serious?” Cyrus‘ anxious voice snapped Anathea out of it. She didn’t respond right away but glanced at the thermometer. It read 102.2°F, and there were little red rashes on Xander’s arms. She understood instantly. “It’s an acute allergic reaction.”
Anathea had taken care of him all these years. No one knew his condition better than she did.
“Call Mateo. Tell him to bring Xander’s usual allergy medication. He’ll need an IV too. Make sure Mateo comes prepared,” she ordered Cyrus, who was pacing back and forth.
“Y–yes, right away,” Cyrus stammered, relieved that someone was taking charge.
The rest of the staff snapped back into action under Anathea’s orders, each of them focused and organized again.
Jenny handed Anathea a towel. As she watched Anathea wipe Xander down, Jenny felt a surge of emotion. As expected, Anathea was their anchor. With her back, they no longer felt like headless chickens running around with no idea what to do.
Sinclair Villa, which had felt so lifeless since Anathea left, finally became lively again, filled with real energy.
Mateo arrived and started treating Xander.
Meanwhile, Anathea was in the kitchen, making soup for Xander, with Jenny helping her out.
“It’s so good to have you back, Mrs. Sinclair,” uttered Jenny sincerely.
“You have no idea–while you were gone, it was like walking into a battle every time Mr. Xander got sick. We’d all be in a panic, not even knowing what we were doing. But here you are, so calm and steady. You have everything under control.”
Anathea smiled faintly.
“You’re not planning to leave again, are you?” Jenny asked, not hiding the hope in her voice.
Without Anathea around, the whole house felt as though it was under a heavy, gloomy cloud, especially with Gregory’s intense and cold presence that made the place unbearable.
But today, he’d actually called ahead and told them to clean the master bedroom because Anathea was coming home. Even his tone had sounded softer, not nearly as menacing as usual.
Jenny had worked in Sinclair Villa for years. She knew only Anathea could influence Gregory’s mood like that.
So, to Jenny, Anathea was her lifeline. She didn’t want Anathea to leave again.
“Maybe,” Anathea said quietly.
As she met Jenny’s eager gaze, something flickered in her eyes faintly.
She did want to leave. But with the way things were now, she couldn’t.
Still, once Gregory got Adam the treatment he needed —and she helped him land the project with Wesley—maybe he might decide she wasn’t useful to him anymore. Maybe then he would bring Natalie back.
