151 Intimacy
Daphne rushed out of her home and asked, “What are you doing here, Mr. Middleton? Why aren’t you coming in?”
Daphne was in her pajamas, and she Chapter had a sweater on. It looked thin, showing how she couldn’t wait to see William.
William gestured for her to get inside the car.
Daphne quickly got into the passenger seat. “What is it, Mr. Middleton?”
William started driving, and they circled around the neighborhood.
Daphne couldn’t figure out why he would visit her at this hour, so she called his name again.
William said in a conflicted tone, “Something happened to Emelie’s friend. Did you do it? Also, did you post the accusations about Emelie online?”
Of course, Daphne’s first reaction was to deny it. “What happened? What posts? Mr. Middleton, what are you talking about?”
“Do you not know about it?”
“I…”
William said calmly, “If there were no traces of clues, I wouldn’t have come here.”
Daphne was speechless as she remembered Emelie saying something similar to her. “Since we were able to find you, that means we have proof.” Daphne clenched her sweater tightly and had a weird look on her face.
Throughout the three years of their relationship, even if they were separated, they would still feel a sense of intimacy.
She was distracted when the car returned to the entrance.
“Get out,” William said.
Daphne returned to her senses and realized he was giving her a chance to explain herself. The way she denied it was the worst response she could give. Then, the doors unlocked.
Suddenly, tears rolled down Daphne’s face. She grabbed his arm and said, “Mr. Middleton, look at my face.”
She had no makeup on, and there were two faint scars on her fair skin.
“The doctor you found said this was the best he could do. Mona disfigured me and never apologized for it. She even accused me of something I never did.
“I went home crying that day. When my mom saw me, she knew Mona bullied me again and got revenge for me.”
William had stopped driving, but he also didn’t say anything. It was hard to discem his feelings.
Daphne continued, “I didn’t know my mom would do that. If I did, I definitely would’ve stopped her. I listened to you. You told me you’d handle it, so I stayed put. If I wanted to do it, I would’ve done it two months ago. Why would I wait until now?”
William didn’t say if he believed her or not. Instead, he asked, “What about the post online?”
“My friend thought you were my boyfriend and that other women shouldn’t get that close to you. She was only stating her opinions online,” Daphne explained. ” She didn’t think it’d get so much attention.”
She added, “I’ve already asked her to delete the post. She even deleted her account. If you think that’s not enough, I’ll apologize to Emelie. I can do anything, so please don’t be angry at me.”
The trees by the road swayed in the wind.
Then, William finally said, “Tell your friend and your mom not to do anything stupid again. When the comments go wild, it brings bad news to Cloudex Corporation and my family.”
Daphne bit her lip. “Are you saying that you’re affected by the comments? Is that why you came looking for me? Are you not seeking revenge for her because she’s hurt?”
