Elias was shameless as ever. "Look at me. I'm always clinging to you, wanting kisses and hugs. If I don't see you for a minute, I throw a tantrum. Don't I act just like a child? Hmm?

"We're already an aunt-nephew couple, an older-woman-younger-man couple, a person-and-dog couple. Adding a mother-son relationship to the mix wouldn't hurt, right?"

Ashley was so shocked that she finally snapped out of it and managed to utter, "Are you out of your mind?"

Elias nodded earnestly. "Of course I am. But you're my medicine, so we can add a doctor-patient relationship to the list too. Whatever you need me to be, that's what I'll be."

Ashley pushed him away, but this time it wasn't with the hatred and rejection she felt earlier. It was more from sheer exasperation. She thought that he was so embarrassing that she needed to distance herself.

However, Elias pulled her back into his arms.

Ashley was exhausted, but she could feel those lingering pains from the past starting to fade away.

She closed her eyes and murmured, "It wasn't your fault..."

Elias responded, "Of course, it wasn't my fault. I'm the innocent one here. You're not allowed to hate me."

His brazen confidence worked like a charm, sweeping away the dark thoughts that had clouded her mind.

Ashley took a deep breath. There was a familiar, faint scent in his embrace, the same one she woke up to every morning. It was the scent that made her feel safe.

Suddenly, Elias pulled off his tie, a dark blue one with an elegant honeysuckle pattern.

He used the tie to cover Ashley's eyes. "It's okay if you're too scared to look at the courtroom. You don't have to. Here."

He tied the knot behind her head. "There's no law that says a lawyer can't cover their eyes during a trial, right?"

With her vision plunged into darkness, Ashley felt a strange sense of calm. After being in a coma for three years, she had grown accustomed to seeing nothing. So now, it actually brought her some peace.

Elias leaned down and kissed her eyes through the tie. "Even with your eyes covered, you're still the most beautiful woman. Who's the lucky guy married to such a gorgeous wife? Oh, right. It's me, Elias Undvike."

Ashley couldn't help but feel embarrassed on his behalf when she thought about the things he had just said.

She muttered, "You're such a weirdo."

Elias helped her to her feet. "Let's try again. If it still doesn't work, then forget it. We'll quit being lawyers and become judges instead. I've always thought that among all the legal professions, judges are the coolest. One bang of the gavel, and they get to decide what's right and wrong."
