Axel’s POV
One of my many duties as Alpha was marking our territory so, why did I ask Tyler to handle it when he ruined my moment with Alana this morning?
It took more than willpower to leave her side and with every step I took farther away from her, my bones only ached more, and the pounding headache that had formed made me want to gouge out my eyeballs with my claws.
My place was right beside Alana and the cold and impassive look on my face told Tyler that I would rather be there than near these borders.
“Thirteen more marks to go, Axel. Although, I believe that with the scowl on your face, we don’t need these, and any intruder will think twice before trying to cross our borders.”
“Ty.”
The annoying piece of shit only echoed a chuckle at me reprimanding him.
I took a handful of the short silver bullets covered in enhanced mountain dust, folded them in my left palm, and interlocked them with my right as I muttered the words of protection.
As I opened my eyes at the end of the spell, the once plain bullet now had half a moon with a paw crisscrossing it tatted to their sides.
I traced the ground with my bare hand, feeling it out for the perfect spot to let each of them lay.
The marks would do a good job of keeping the…unwanted things out.
As soon as I turned my back to the border, an invisible force pulled me forward to the point that I staggered to get a grip on myself. The puzzled look on Tyler’s face was the confirmation I needed to tell me that what I just felt wasn’t in my head but was actually visible.
“What just happened?” Tyler asked, confused.
It took a few seconds of reasoning for me to put a pin on it.
The mate bond was pulling me towards Alana. And then it clicked. She was on heat, and that was why I didn't want to leave her side.
That should be impossible. We were supposed to still have time. We only just marked each other yesterday.
But that didn’t stop me from moving on autopilot back to the house where my mate was.
My heart beat erratically at the many things that this would mean for Alana and me, but none came close to the arousal and need to be with her that I felt.
Coral’s voice popped into my head with more confirmation. Alana is going into heat, Axel. Get here fast.
Even if she hadn’t reached out, I was already halfway back to the house.
As I flung the door open, there she was, looking at me like I was the only person in the world she wanted to see. I tuned in on her and it was just the two of us. Nothing else.
My mate.
“Axel,”
“Alana.”
The desire that coursed through me and the tension between us was thick and visible, I didn’t make out whatever Coral was saying.
I took haphazard steps to Alana and took her hand in mine, the other gently cupping the back of her neck.
“Are you okay?”
“My body's on fire.” Her eyes glistened with tears and my protective side only wanted to make it stop.
I carried her to the bedroom and once I put her down to close the door, she jumped back on me, straddling me and pressing her heels into my waist to seal whatever space there was between us.
Her arousal permeated the air as she took my lips and did a number on my brain that I couldn't believe.
“Wait, Alana. We should talk about this.” It tasted bitter as words were now in place of Alana’s lips.
“About what?” Frustration evident in her eyes.
“You’re in heat. This is…unusual. Not unheard of, but a rarity.”
“And I just want you.”
My grip on her waist tightened as I pushed back the base instincts that told me to screw conversations and kiss her hard till she didn’t have any breath left in her lungs to breathe.
“I want you too, Alana.”
“So touch me. Please.” She squeezed harder on my waist, settling lower to meet my crotch where she tried to rock back and forth. Needing friction.
I put her down, more in pain than her from the separation. As I led her to the bed, she had more of a confused look as to why I was holding back. I did too.
“We’ve been mated and marked and you’re now in heat.” She nodded with understanding. Deep violet eyes scanning mine. “You're at your most fertile period and even without that, my seed is as potent as it can be since I’m Alpha.”
I searched her face for any reaction. Maybe she understood where I was going with this. Nothing.
“What I mean is that there’s a high chance, almost without a doubt, that you may be…”
“I don’t mind that.” The response was a little quick.
“That you may become…”
“Pregnant. I understand, Axel.”
Had Alana thought about this? About having my kids before or was this just her feral side talking?
