Alana’s POV
“Keep her name out of your mouth if you still want your teeth and your tongue,” Axel growled in annoyance. “Fuck that. You won’t have either of those by the end of this.”
Axel’s anger only seemed to entertain Alistair. His lips tilted in a lopsided grin and he gave a one-sided shrug.
“I get that the mate bond is making you go all crazy right now but Alana’s name shouldn’t be your prime concern. Just for the record, mate bonds have always irked me.” He cringed as he spoke. “I prefer freedom.”
“You. Made. A. Mistake.”
“Do you know what I think?” He took in a sharp inhale before continuing. Successfully pushing Axel and I to the edge. “I think that it is you who made a mistake by leaving your pack unattended to. And I have to say, Valentina looks really spicy today.”
He hummed suggestively as he threw Axel’s words back at him and my heart somersaulted. Was the pack being attacked? Was the Luna okay? Was Axel’s dad okay?
I didn’t fail to notice that he didn’t use the word “looked” when he was addressing the Luna. That meant she wasn’t dead.
Either way, what the hell was going on? Why was this man so intent on attacking us?
The endless questions caused blood to rush to my head and my heart began thumping aggressively in my ears.
Axel’s grip on me tightened to a fault as he shook with unchecked anger.
“What did you do, Alistair?” Axel’s voice was low but loaded with venom because all the feelings I could grasp that weren’t mine were the opposite of how he sounded.
Confusion. Rage. Determination.
“Let’s just say we’re repaying a debt you owe.” He ended there, not rendering any more explanation than that.
“I will leave you and the damsel you have there to do what you can before the deed is sealed.”
“I owe you no fucking debt.” His words dripped with poison as he took a predatory step to what looked like prey to him.
“I lost a lot of my men that day, thanks to you and Micheal. Good. Men. And you know what I’m talking about.”
“You brought whatever happened to you and your men on yourselves.”
It was my turn to be confused. What day?
Alistair tutted and shook his head slightly. A look of caution flashed in his dead eyes. “I still believe otherwise. But if you say so, we will most definitely be in touch. Much sooner than you expect. I would advise you to check up on dear old Mom.”
As sneakily as he came, he disappeared into thin air with a devilish smile on his scared face, making him look even more cold and terrifying.
Without a word or thought, Axel picked me up like a weightless leaf and zoomed back to the cabins. If he had let me walk, I would’ve by all means slowed him down.
The insecurities started to creep in. This was the moment that Jerad was talking about. It was time to fight for the pack. To defend it as its leader but all I had done so far was being a liability to the one person who could do just that.
Patches of fur sprouted from Axel’s hands and neck as we reached the cabin in no time. He set me down and flung the door wide open.
There was no trace of Alpha Micheal or the Luna. Axel inhaled sharply and turned his head towards the back door.
With his hand and most of his large frame protectively shielding me, he stalked to the back of his parent’s cabin, onto the clearing that separated theirs from ours.
“You run when I tell you to.” It was a command.
Nothing was broken and everything looked in order. The only missing things were the people we left in the cabins before our date. —Micheal and Valentina.—
A faint metallic smell lingered in the air as we drew closer to our cabin. Axel’s growls were getting louder and right when I thought he would snap, he paused and crouched in front of me. Hand shielding me behind him, scanning his prey. No. Preys.
Just as their leader did, they came out from the shadows and began circling Axel and me in the middle.
Everything was a blur because adrenaline coursed through me to my fingertips but the first one that lunged at us fell back just as quickly as he came —lifeless.—
Axel was still in human form, tearing Alistair’s men as though they were dolls but they kept multiplying in numbers and soon, one managed to rake through Axel’s shirt and draw blood.
Something had to be wrong because one cut wasn’t supposed to make Axel lose all the strength in his limbs. Not the Axel I knew.
“Cowards,” Axel rasped out. “Fight me without your poisons and see if you stand a chance.”
More and more of them came at him, and the next thing I felt was a hand as cold and lifeless as glaciers pulling me from Axel’s grasp.
“Alana. Run.” Axel growled. “Run!”
There he was. The one person who showed me that I was a complete werewolf without a wolf. The only person who cooed me to sleep when the whole pack was turned against me. The person who put his life on the line and fought to defend me time and time again. There he was, slipping away.
“Run, Alana,” his voice was muffled by strained grunts. Pained grunts.
His deep oceanic-blue eyes were losing their shimmer.
