By then, Gwendolyn was a little annoyed. She tapped on the edge of the bed. “You can explain the whole thing again after I’m done punishing you.”
Cedrick was stumped.
Feeling stifled, he pursed his lips in silence and looked at her resentfully.
She wore an indifferent expression and used the ruler to rap the edge of the bed again, reminding him, “Have you forgotten the fifty points on the Precepts for Men Kieran gave you previously?”
Cedrick was rendered speechless. He struggled internally for some time before ultimately spreading his fingers and thrusting his palm forward.
Gwendolyn shook her head in dissatisfaction. “Both hands.”
“Gwenny, I still have to sign agreements at work tomorrow.” If his right hand was injured, he wouldn’t be able to write well.
She remained expressionless and unfazed, seemingly reminding him with her silence that there was no room for negotiations.
Stung by her gaze, he stretched out his right hand in a fit of pique, offering both palms.
Slap! Slap! Slap!
She struck his palms with the ruler forcefully thrice.
His palms instantly swelled up and reddened.
Cedrick scrunched up his face in agony. His fingertips trembled slightly as he held his breath, feeling deeply hurt inside.
Gwendolyn looked down at him with reddened eyes and asked, “You haven’t shown our babies much care since they were born. Cedrick, do you no longer like me, or are you not fond of the children I’ve endured much pain to deliver for you?”
He lifted his gaze abruptly, shocked by her thoughts. “How could you think that? It’s because I’ve seen with my own eyes how much you’ve suffered for our babies over the past nine months that I sympathize with you and comply with everything you say.”
He bit his lower lip. Discomfort churned within his chest as he complained in an undertone, “Gwenny, I feel like ever since we had our babies, you’ve been treating me with less care and affection than before. I’m not as important to you as our babies. You’re blaming and punishing me because of them this time. You don’t even care about my feelings at all.”
Gwendolyn stared at him in astonishment and burst out laughing in anger.
“Why are you jealous of the babies? They’re still so young. Two one-month-old babies who have no ability to care for themselves require our utmost love and care. What do you take your own children for? Your love rivals?”
Cedrick lowered his eyes and fell silent.
Gwendolyn hit his hand three more times with the ruler with the same amount of force as she was determined to teach him a lesson.
Hissing in pain, Cedrick furrowed his brows. That was the first time he had to kneel on Lego pieces while having his palms beaten.
His knees hurt, his hands were in pain, and his heart ached all the more terribly. He had nowhere to vent his grievances, causing him to feel uncomfortable all over.
“Gwenny, to me, nothing is more important than you because you are my priority, but it seems like the babies have already surpassed my position in your heart. You can say I’m unreasonable or making a fuss, and I’ll admit it.” Still, admitting it doesn’t mean I’ll change my mind.
She sighed and softened her tone. “Ceddy, you don’t understand the hardship of a mother carrying a child for nine months. If I didn’t love you or care about you, I wouldn’t be willing to have children for you. I love and worry about our two babies because they are our children. There are many disputes and dramas in wealthy families. Countless young children from prominent households are kidnapped and or taken away by force by their families’ business rivals. That’s why I’m genuinely scared. Moreover, after that incident involving Gina, I had to be vigilant. I’m not doing this because I no longer cherish you.”
Cedrick sighed as well and asked softly, “Gwenny, you always feel like someone is going to steal our babies. Do you think you may be suffering from postpartum anxiety?”
Gwendolyn’s face darkened once more. She raised the ruler in her hand and smacked him thrice again, but this time, she hit only his left palm.
Then, she answered his question with all seriousness, “Maybe a little. However, you know there’s such a thing as postpartum anxiety, and yet you still provoked me, so I have all the more reason to punish you!”
