Although she was speaking to Jerome, she was actually rejecting Kieran.

The look on Kieran’s face changed.

Jerome, who was observant of others’ reactions, immediately jumped to Kieran’s aide. “Inez, an engagement isn’t the same as a marriage. You can still date after getting engaged and only get registered after both of you are willing to. It won’t affect anything.”

“But I don’t want to date. Too many unhappy things happened over the past years. I’m really in no mood to date. All I want to do is to focus on my work and be prepared to take over Mossey Corporation.”

With that, she turned around and left the living room without looking back.

The sound of a door slamming came from upstairs. Once again, silence filled the living room.

Madelyn and Jerome exchanged a look before turning their gazes toward Kieran.

Kieran lowered his gaze. He seemed to be thinking about something, but no one could figure out his emotions.

Madelyn asked carefully, “Do you like Inez, Mr. Kieran?”

“Yes,” replied Kieran gently, “but I have hurt her with my previous action. I understand if she’s unwilling to accept me.”

Madelyn said, “We’ve been spoiling Inez ever since she was a child. She has a very stubborn personality. If you sincerely like her and wish to be together with her, I can help you convince her.”

Upon deliberation, Kieran thought that it was too embarrassing and troublesome. “It’s fine. This is between me and Inez. If you persuade her, I’m afraid she’ll resent me even more. I can wait if she’s unwilling to go ahead with the engagement. She waited a year for me in the past. I can wait another year for her this time.”

Madelyn and Jerome were glad to hear that.

Madelyn said, “Don’t worry, Mr. Kieran. Although I won’t deliberately try to persuade her, I can create opportunities for both of you to meet.”

Kieran raised his head and met her gaze. This time, he did not refuse.

A few hours later, Madelyn knocked on Inez’s door.

“It’s time for dinner. Hurry up! We’re waiting for you.”

“All right!”

Sitting in front of her computer, Inez finished typing the last sentence of the proposal before massaging her sore shoulders and heading downstairs.

She did not notice anything strange until she walked to the dining room.

Kieran was the only one sitting at the long dining table.

Madelyn and Jerome were nowhere to be seen. and on the dining table, there were candles burning.

Evidently, they were deliberately trying to create a chance for Kieran and her to have a candlelight dinner together.

She shook her head exasperatedly, turned around, and left.

When Kieran saw that she was about to leave, he jumped to his feet and grabbed her wrist.

“Inez, you probably can tell how much effort Mr. and Mrs. Mossey put into this. Why don’t we have a talk?”

Inez remained expressionless. “There’s nothing for us to talk about.”

She wanted to leave, but Kieran tightened his grip on her wrist.

Kieran stared at his hand, which was holding her wrist, and smiled faintly. “You came to the hospital in Salinsburgh the previous time to bid me farewell. Seeing how sad you were, I wanted to reach out and console you. However, I didn’t even manage to extend my hand. This time, I’m glad that I didn’t let go of your hand.”

Inez sighed. “What’s the point of saying this now?”

Kieran pulled her up slightly, making her meet his gaze. In a serious tone, he said, “Percy isn’t a good man. Now that I have canceled this engagement that you had no say in, you have the freedom to choose. Isn’t that good?”

Inez became angry when he mentioned that. “You deliberately let the police bring him to the Mossey residence and listened to him mock me. Are you trying to make a joke out of me on purpose? Do you want me to realize that no other man but you will like me, the Mossey family’s cheap daughter?”

As she complained, tears streamed down her cheeks.
