’How many sorrows weighed on her mind?’
His gaze was affectionate when he looked at Monique, and he wondered what he could do for her. Monique felt a little awkward. She knew Simon was looking at her, and pondered what was on his mind when Angel told him that she had gone back to her hometown for an arranged blind date. She had no courage to look at him. She pursed her lips and said, “Cellphones are not allowed at kindergarten. Why did you bring it?”
Simon looked at Angel as Monique's attention turned to her daughter. Her face was cute, and her eyes rolled with tears, but she tried to hold them back. He remembered Monique told him that her name was Angel. She was like her mother: determined and persistent.
His heart almost melted when Angel’s eyes welled in tears. With the cup of water, he walked over. “Angel probably didn’t know. Monnie. Don’t blame her. She’s still a child.”
Angel raised her eyes and looked at her mother. Her mother was still looking at her, waiting for an answer. Monique did not mean to make her feel bad, but she did not want Angel to flaunt it in class, or compare herself to her classmates since she could not afford to give her such luxuries when they left Henry. She only wanted to know why Angel brought the cellphone to kindergarten.
Angel bit her lip and replied slowly, “Mommy came late yesterday. I didn;t want to be the last to leave for today too. I only wanted to remind Mommy to come get me.”
Monique wanted to open her mouth and say something, but the words were stuck in her throat. Speechless, her eyes turned red and she hugged Angel. After a long moment, the words finally came out from her lips. “I’m sorry.”
