Joy looked tormented. Still, she tried to keep her voice soft. "What do you mean? No one paid me off!"

Then she started to cry as if she was being falsely accused.

Her acting was so convincing that others might have believed her, but Richard wasn't moved by her tears. "I'm going to ask you one last time, and you better tell me the truth. Who paid you off?"

Joy stubbornly repeated, "I said no one."

"Okay, you tell me then." Richard turned to Bliss.

Bliss thought she had escaped notice, but now Richard was looking at her again, and she began to panic. "I'm not totally sure, but one night, Joy said she needed to use the bathroom. Something felt off, so I followed her and saw her talking quietly to some man I don't know."

"Where did this happen?"

"In the back garden by the corner of the wall. I heard them mention something about tampering with food."

Richard looked sharply at Joy. "Are you still going to deny it?"

"Fine. I did it." Joy lifted her head, no longer looking vulnerable. "I did it. So what?"

Joy thought Richard wouldn't really do anything to her. Even though the interrogation was intimidating, she believed she could find a way out.

Sensing her thoughts, Richard asked, "Are you admitting this now because you think this person will protect you?"
