“I don’t think you’ll have any objection to that, so I’ll get going. I’ll show up at 10:00 am for Lodge Co.’s press conference tomorrow,” Ariana said. 

She pushed Brian away. As she turned to leave, he grabbed her arm again. She frowned, looking like she was being pestered by a rat from the sewers. She didn’t bother hiding her disgust, snarling, “Your refusal to give up is getting tiring, Brian.” 

He saw the disgust and revulsion in her eyes. It was a look he’d found familiar the first time he’d seen it in her eyes, but he hadn’t thought much about it then. At that moment, it suddenly occurred to him why it was familiar- it was how he’d looked at her in the past! 

He fumed. How dare she look at him like that! 

He gritted his teeth and snarled, “You’d better think twice about calling this engagement off, Ariana.” 

“She already has.” A voice came from outside the private room, and it sounded amused. The door was pushed open to reveal William standing there. He wore a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He even had a silver armband on. 

As Ariana wondered what he was doing there, he stepped forward and pulled her into his arms. He said to Brian, People pick the right horse to back, Mr. Lodge. I think Ari likes me more than you.” 

Ariana looked at him like he’d lost his mind when she heard his absurd words. 

“You?” Brian took a step back and pointed at them. “You’ve got quite a few tricks up your sleeve, Ariana. I underestimated you in the past.” 

She frowned. He continued icily, “I’d still advise you to think this through, though. William doesn’t call the shots in Silverport City–you’d better consider the matter seriously before choosing between me and him.” 

“Does she even need to think about it?” William asked light–heartedly. “My family is clean–you know very well all the dirty things your family has gotten involved in over the years. I’m a good man, and I’ve never dated anyone. You, on the other hand… I remember you having a child with Ms. Granger, right? 

“Ability–wise, I’m not any worse than you. Status–wise, your family isn’t any better than mine. I can keep Ari safe and stop others from bullying him, too. Anyone with a brain wouldn’t pick you, Mr. Lodge. I’d advise you to stop embarrassing yourself.” 

Every word out of his mouth made Brian’s expression darken. He noticed how Ariana didn’t step away from William despite him wrapping an arm around his waist. “Fine, then. Let’s call off the engagement!” 

Ariana was secretly relieved when she saw how easily Brian had agreed to call things off after William had pissed him off with a few sentences.
