Chapter 52
Chapter 52
When Igor heard that Gwen had sold Ariana to Vance, he froze. “Mom, if you sold Ariana to Vance, what about Mr. Lodge?”
“Mr. Lodge?” Gwen’s face darkened at the mention of his name.
“Ariana completely offended him. Do you think the Lodges will still accept her? It’s better to sell her off while someone’s willing to pay.
“Even if she ends up as the lady of the Hubbords, it’s better than having her stay here and compete with you for the family inheritance!”
With a bang the door to the Torrey residence was suddenly kicked open.
Gwen jumped in fright at the abrupt noise. She looked up and saw Ariana standing at the door.
“Why… Why are you…” Gwen’s face filled with shock. She hadn’t expected Ariana to show up here. Wasn’t she supposed to have been sent to the hotel by the driver?
“You’re wondering why I’m here, right?” Ariana’s voice was cold and distant, and Gwen started feeling guilty under her questioning tone.
Ariana continued, “I never imagined this. Though we might not share any mother–daughter bond, I’ve always been polite and respectful to you. Dad treated you well too, and yet you sold me off to a scumbag.”
“I… I did it all for your own good!” Gwen retorted matter–of–factly. “You can’t be Mrs. Lodge, and being Mrs. Hubbord isn’t too bad at all. I did everything for your sake, and now you’re blaming me for that.”
Ariana didn’t bother to hide her disgust upon hearing Gwen’s shameless words. “How can someone as shameless as you even exist?”
“Arianal Who gave you the right to talk to my mom like that!” Igor stepped before Gwen and shot Ariana a look
“You should consider yourself lucky that Mr. Hubbord takes a fancy to you. My mom was just finding you a good match. Do you even realize how you might never get married after offending Mr. Lodge? Who else would dare marry you?”
Watching the mother and son echo each other, Ariana cackled. Her almost hysterical laughter sent Gwen’s hair standing on end.
“Oh, so Ms. Lambert meant well,” Ariana thoughtfully murmured.
Seeing her smiling, Gwen put on a flattering face and stepped forward. “Of course. I’ve always had your best interests at heart. I’ve watched you grow up, so how could possibly harm you?”
Ariana raised her eyebrows and smiled faintly as she eyed Gwen’s hypocritical face. “What a shame. Mr. Kingsman just announced our relationship tonight, and yet you sold me off to Vance.
“When he carried me out of Vance’s room, his face was purple with fury. He said he’d come to you for an explanation.”
“What?” Gwen froze. Her voice was trembling as she asked “Mr. Kingsman? Are you talking about William Kingsman?”
“Who else could it be?”
Gwen’s face turned paler at Ariana’s confirmation. “Are you perhaps saying that Mr. Kingsman is interested in you?”
