Chapter 59
“Alright. Don’t feel bad about it. I’ll have Emily send you horne,” Brian said as he gently patted Evelyn on the head. Evelyn’s heart went into a brief panic when she realized Brian wasn’t planning to send her home himself. But she knew she couldn’t push her luck.
She lowered her head slightly and said, “That’s good… Brian, I really can’t lose you.” With that, she got into Emily’s car.
Meanwhile, Ariana was going to leave. Just as she turned a corner, she was pulled aside and found Brian pinning her to the wall.
“What are you doing!” Ariana tried to resist, but Brian held her firmly in place. His cold voice followed. “You seem to be in quite a hurry to leave.”
“Aren’t you supposed to be comforting Evelyn? Why are you here?” Arian frowned. It was clear she refused further engagement with him.
Brian released her arm but didn’t step back. “Ariana, are you disappointed we didn’t call off the engagement?” He’d noticed the flickering dissatisfaction in her eyes.
Ariana responded with a sneer, “Why ask what you already know? Of course, I’m upset. The fact that the engagement wasn’t called off means that I can’t officially be the lady of the Kingsmans.
“I’m mad about it, so I’d appreciate it if you could stay away from me to avoid dragging me into your mess.”
Instead of being angered by her words, Brian laughed. “Ariana, do you really think William wants to marry you?
“Don’t dream about it. Do you think he’d even bother with you if it weren’t for the fact that you’re my fiancée?”
Ariana raised an eyebrow and shot back. “I see what you’re rying to say. You’re suggesting William approached me just to make you mad because I’m your fiancée, right?
“Well, I don’t believe that. Whatever connection I have with William is not up to anyone else’s discussion.”
Hearing Ariana casually categorize him as “anyone else” sent a surge of anger through Brian. He retorted, “Well that’s unfortunate then. You’re officially my fiancée, so you can’t marry William or be the lady of the Kingsmans.”
“If you came all the way just to say that, please kindly move aside. I have no time to waste with you,” Ariana said as she moved to walk past him.
But Brian said, “Ariana, I’m warning you to stay away from William and remember your current status,”
“Status? What status?” Ariana pretended not to understand
She continued, “I don’t understand, Mr. Lodge. Though we’re technically engaged, you do your thing, and I’ll do mine. Isn’t that how it works in our circles?
“We’re bound to call off the engagement someday, so there’s no rush.”
