Chapter 63
Ariana sounded steady and confident as she spoke with a smile gleaming in her eyes.
Evelyn’s face turned darker at her words. “Lila, Maddie, let’s go!”
“Stop right there,” Ariana called out in a cold voice as she looked at the group. “I don’t recall giving you permission to leave.”
“Evelyn has decided not to stoop to your level. What more do you
Ariana glanced at the spilled food on the floor and said, “Haven’t you learned to appreciate food? Did your parents teach you to waste food like this?”
Maddie stepped forward, and her voice was laced with mockery, “Don’t pretend to be all righteous. Everyon knows the Torrey family is at its wits end. You’re nothing without the Lodge family’s help.
“You’re barely hanging on thanks to Mr. Lodge, so how dare you put on airs?”
She scanned the crowd and raised her voice to say, “Or could it be that you’re so broke you can’t even afford food? 1 heard that when you tried to win Mr. Lodge over, you were unbelievably pathetic.
“You knelt to polish his shoes acting like a helper and attended to all Mrs. Lodge Senior’s orders, just to win her favor. That’s how you wormed your way into becoming the future lady of the Lodges.”
At this point, she shot Ariana a mocking glare and continued, “If you can get down on your knees today and beg us, maybe we’ll buy you this meal.”
“Exactly. Everyone knows how expensive the cafeteria food is. From the looks of it, there isn’t a single piece of meat on your plate. Is it because you’re too poor to afford any?”
Lila, who’d suffered from Ariana’s earlier tirade, regained her confidence. She smirked as if she’d uncovered Ariana’s weakness. Then, she turned to shout toward the crowd.
“Everyone, take a look! Ms. Torrey is about to beg us for a meal. She’s going to bow and scrape like a dog!”
The cafeteria was instantly swarming with a crowd of curious students eager to know what was going on.
Evelyn made a token effort to stop her friends. “Lila, Maddle, don’t do this…”
“Don’t interfere, Evelyn! Ariana was the one being shameless in the first place! We were ready to let her go, but she didn’t appreciate us anyway!”
Ariana stood calmly amid the commotion. A faint smile played on her lips.
Maddie seemed annoyed by Ariana’s composed smile. She glared at the latter and scowled, “What are you smiling
at?”
Ariana’s smile deepened. “I’m smiling because you don’t know what you’ve gotten yourself into.”
Maddie frowned. “What do you mean?”
