Noticing Brian’s anger, Lila and Maddie exchanged a smugglance and saw the delight in each other’s eyes.
Even if Brian was indifferent to Ariana, he’d never tolerate her being close to another man. They were looking forward to seeing how Ariana could keep up her pretenses.
But Evelyn was lost in thought as she looked at Brian. Brian had never come to school just to pick Ariana up, and he’d never gone to such lengths to find her.
Could it be that… Evelyn bit her lip and decided against pondering on the thought. She hoped she might just be overthinking.
Meanwhile, in a restaurant, Ariana eyed the extravagant dishes on the table and grumbled, “They knocked over your meal, Mr. Kingsman. So, why am I the one paying for this?”
William sat across from her and sipped his coffee. “I saw everything.”
“Saw what?”
“I saw you let them knock over the meal on purpose.”
Ariana continued enjoying her steak and replied, “That sounds like a reckless accusation, Mr. Kingsman. How could I have known they’d come over and knock over the food?”
“You were standing by the mirror near the cafeteria’s dish station, so you saw Evelyn and the others through the mirror. You positioned yourself where they could see you, and this entire incident was staged.
“If I’m correct, your goal was for them to confront you and create a scene. You’d take the chance to warn the college that you’re no longer the timid submissive Ariana bowing down to Brian. Plus, it’s your way of asserting yourself as his fiancée, right?”
Ariana considered his words briefly and nodded. “Makes sense. Continue.”
“The cafeteria is the biggest gossip hub on campus, especially during lunch when it’s crowded. News spreads the fastest here. I must say, you have a quite clever strategy.”
William raised his coffee cup in a mock toast and added, “Bat all this effort is just to announce that you don’t love Brian and that your engagement is just a business marriage.”
“No. I went to all this trouble to expand the Torrey family’s network,” Ariana unhurriedly replied.
She calmly continued, “Being Brian’s fiancée has its perks haven’t been to school in a while, but the campus is like a massive marketplace. We get to meet people from all walks of life and families of varying influence. These connections are invaluable.
“Now that everyone knows I’m Ariana, and Brian’s fiancée, I’ll have more networks and opportunities to leverage.
“You’re more clever than I thought,” William remarked as he set the cup of coffee on the table.
Ariana arched her brow. “Thanks for the compliment, Mr. Kingsman.”
A waitress approached with a heart–shaped dessert and smiled warmly. “Here’s a complimentary Valentine’s Day dessert for every couple dining in the restaurant.”
