Ariana’s gaze grew frostier as she took in Gwen’s shamelessness. “Well, you’ve made the wrong move, Ms. Lambert. Brian loathes me now. There’s no way he’d help our family.”
Gwen was baffled by that. “But how?”
Ariana didn’t want to waste her time explaining such dull things to Gwen. She turned on her heel and headed upstairs.
Only Gwen remained on the spot, panicking. That was when she received a phone call.
It was one of the company’s shareholders, Horace Lindt. He anxiously exclaimed, “Ms.Torrey, the company’s seriously at the end of its line! Can you raise the funds or not?
“Calm yourself, Mr. Lindt. Can’t you tell I’m already trying to brainstorm a solution?” Before Gwen could say more, she received another call. She had no choice but to put this call on hold and answer the other one.
The phone call was from one of Torrey Co.’s business partners, Cedric Zox, whose voice rattled with anxiety. ” What’s going on with Torrey Co., Mrs. Torrey? When can our project resume? You need to give me an answer. If this doesn’t work out, I’ll invest in another company instead!”
Gwen was getting nervous at that point. “We’re already doing the best we can, Mr. Zox. Please don’t worry about it!
“How can I not worry? Let me make one thing clear. We won’t let you off the hook if you don’t come to the company and give us a reasonable explanation before this afternoon!” Cedric hung up after saying that.
Gwen looked at her phone, her chest tightening with frustration. She mentally yelled at Ariana, wondering why the latter had failed.
That afternoon, Gwen had no choice but to make herself presentable and drive to Torrey Co.
She had just entered the company. There, she realized the employees had long descended into chaos. Everyone swarmed at her, demanding an explanation once they saw her arrive.
“Everybody, quiet! Settle down! Mrs. Torrey is here to give us all an answer!” John protectively stood before Gwen as the two walked further into the company.
However, Gwen soon noticed everyone was already seated in the conference room and awaiting an answer from her. She never imagined so many people would show up at the company. Because of that, she felt briefly uneasy.
The smell of cigarettes filled the conference room as one of the shareholders stepped forward. “We’ve already waited for many days, Mrs. Torrey. It’s about time you gave us an explanation, right?”
“Yeah! Don’t you owe us an answer? Tell us whether our money is gone!”
“Are the rumors true? Is the Torrey family broke?”
Questions came flying at Gwen from all directions.
Gwen used to be revered by all in the company. Alas, she had no say in this situation. “Dear shareholders and directors, please calm yourselves. About the company… I–Ive handed everything to Ariana. You may seek her out if you’re pressed for an answer!”
“What? You entrusted everything to Ms. Torrey? You must be joking, Mrs. Torrey.”
