Jeremy's tone was low. If it weren't for his furrowed eyebrows, it would be hard to see that he was asking a question.
Melody flinched and immediately lowered her eyes, wanting to hide her current state. She explained softly, "No. A bug just flew into my eye."
Jeremy's forehead relaxed, and he no longer pursued the issue. Instead, he asked, "What's wrong with your hearing aids?"
It took Melody a while to understand what he meant. "It's already fixed."
However, her voice was still soft and even a little hoarse, clearly indicating that something wasn't right.
She carefully looked back up at Jeremy. Her grip on her phone tightened, and she finally gathered enough courage to ask, "Did you come out here to look for me?"
Jeremy did not deny this. "Harold asked me to check on you. He said you were upset. Why are you upset?"
Melody blinked. She didn't know how to answer him. After all, she couldn't bring herself to tell Jeremy it was her birthday, too.
The phone in her hand was still flashing, catching Jeremy's attention. "Answer the call first," he reminded her.
Like a puppet, Melody obeyed his directive and answered the call.
The next second, Felicia's cheery voice chirped, "Surprise, Melody! Happy birthday!
"Guess who I'm with right now? I ran into Jason Chilton, and I only remembered today was your birthday after he mentioned it. I'm so sorry, sweetie. I've just been so busy. Once I'm done with this interview, I'll make sure to make it up to you, okay?" Felicia's voice was bright and crisp.
Melody always had her phone's volume turned up because of her hearing issues. Her heart clenched as she wondered whether Jeremy had heard Felicia's words.
When she looked up at him, her eyes met his thoughtful gaze.
She clenched her fingers around her phone and said to Felicia in a low voice, "We can discuss it when you get back. I'm still at the hospital. I'll call you when I get home."
With that, she promptly hung up the phone.
A brief silence fell between them until Jeremy spoke up first. "Today's your birthday?"
Melody's stomach plummeted. In a daze, she nodded mechanically. "Yes."
