During the photoshoot, Alexis suddenly asked, "Have you thought about getting surgery for your hearing? Wearing hearing aids must be inconvenient."
"All the time," Melody said. "I'm saving up."
Her balance was still in the five figures—nowhere near the 600 grand she needed for surgery—but at least she had a goal to work toward.
Alexis rarely asked about Melody's family, but she suddenly blurted out, "You're saving up? You're Andrew's foster daughter. Wouldn't he pay for it?"
Melody paused before answering, "I'd rather earn it myself." She refused to give Andrew another way to control her life. Only by relying on herself could she eventually have the confidence to stand up to him.
Besides, Andrew never wanted to pay anything for her anyway.
...
As they packed up, Melody's phone rang.
It was Jeremy. He sounded as indifferent as ever. "Where are you?"
"I just finished shooting."
"Stay there. I'll pick you up. Ms. Thompson wants us home for dinner."
After hanging up, Melody opened her WhatsApp and saw a message from Ophelia.
Thankfully, Jeremy didn't stand her up this time. Instead, he arrived quickly.
As she got into his car, she said, "Next time, just let me know. I can grab a ride. You don't have to pick me up." She now had a bit of PTSD whenever Jeremy said he'd come pick her up. It always felt like the moment he said that, he was bound to stand her up.
