That comment made it sound like Melody had all the free time in the world.
She looked down and explained, "I'm just worried there might be things I don't understand, and I won't be able to explain them to the professor."
"You've been at this hospital for a long time. If you still don't know how to explain the equipment, I have no idea what you've been doing all this time." Jeremy's tone was harsh and carried a trace of annoyance.
Yesterday at the hotel, Melody's wild assumptions had left him deeply uncomfortable.
Upon sensing that something was off in his voice, Melody forced a small smile and turned to speak with the professor.
Jeremy hadn't replied to the message she'd sent him last night, so Melody didn't know if he was still angry.
The professor's main purpose for this visit was to explore more advanced treatment options for the condition.
Even though Tessa had given up on treatment herself, she was still willing to be studied as a subject.
Melody led the professor through a tour of all the hospital's diagnostic equipment and helped facilitate conversations with several patients per his request. She acted as his translator the entire time.
By the time they were done, it was lunchtime.
Melody then took her notes and delivered the assessment report to the doctors' office.
Harold called her over and said, "Ms. Wardolf, good work. Join us for lunch later."
Melody wanted to refuse, but Harold added, "Dr. Chesson won't be eating with us—he's having lunch with the professor."
At the mention of his name, Jeremy lifted his gaze and glanced at Melody.
That afternoon, Melody waited outside the doctors' office after work.
Since Jeremy hadn't replied to her messages, she had no choice but to explain in person.
However, Harold told her that Jeremy and Krystal had already taken the professor back to the hotel.
He smiled at her. "You were really impressive today, Ms. Wardolf. Were you a top student back in school?" He was referring to how she had handled the entire tour in fluent Averic. He curiously asked, "Why did you go into nursing with such skills? Have you never thought about studying medicine?"
Melody explained, "I wasn't a top student. My grades weren't great—I barely got into Jembina Medical University."
"It's not like a lot of our nurses come from Jembina School of Medicine," Harold joked.
Jembina School of Medicine was one of the top schools in the country. While its nursing program had plenty of students, not many actually pursued hospital nursing in the end. Most chose to work for pharmaceutical companies instead.
After all, everyone knew being a nurse was exhausting and didn't pay well.
Melody chatted with Harold for a little while before leaving.
Back at the hotel, she waited in the lobby, but Jeremy never came downstairs. Instead, she got a call from Andrew.
"Melody, don't forget to take the day off this Friday and come home."
Her expression turned solemn. "I know."
It was Cheryl's death anniversary that coming Friday, and Melody had already arranged her schedule with the head nurse in advance.
Andrew continued, "How have things been at the hospital? Have you had any more trouble with your hearing?"
"No, everything's fine."
Andrew sighed. "That's good.
"Melody, you know I worry about you. That's why I didn't want you to go back to working at the hospital.
"But Jeremy called not long ago and said you've been doing well. Everyone in your department wants to keep you. That's why I agreed."
Melody was stunned. "Jeremy told you that?"
Melody could be jealous of anyone in the world except Cheryl. So, even if everything that had happened back then had been her doing, she would never tell Jeremy.
She hesitated before asking, "Are we going together tomorrow, or..."
Cheryl's grave was in the suburbs, which was an hour's drive away.
Before Jeremy could answer, Krystal walked out.
She looked at Jeremy. "The records for Bed 18 just arrived. Are you coming to take a look?"
Then, she glanced at Melody. "Do you need something?"
Jeremy turned and walked back into the office. "Bring me the records." He didn't even acknowledge that Melody was still waiting for his answer.
Two hours passed, and Melody waited outside the entire time.
Finally, when Jeremy and Krystal came out, she quickly stood up.
Jeremy blankly looked at her. "Why are you still here?"
Melody froze. "I just wanted to ask about tomorrow—"
Without waiting for her to finish, Jeremy snapped the file in his hands shut and coldly said, "Do you not know how to find the way on your own?"
The records of the patient from Bed 18 had been a complete mess. Jeremy and Krystal had spent ages going through them and still hadn't sorted everything out.
Naturally, he wasn't in the best mood.
Melody was stunned as Jeremy turned and walked back into the office, shutting the door behind him.
Krystal then flatly said, "I used to think that hearing ability and intelligence weren't related, but you're making me reconsider."
