After dropping Ingrid off at her campus gate, Evelyn reminded her a few more times to stay safe and take care of her pregnancy. Only then did she instruct the driver, “Let’s go back.”

At best, she could be described as modest and demure But if Evelyn were to put it less kindly, she seemed petty and unsophisticated.

eyes drifted back to the scarf. It was bright magenta, so gaudy and outdated. No amount of fancy packaging could change its poor quality.
Evelyn had to admit that coming from a modest background did have its limitations. She recalled the gifts Miranda used to bring–scarves, jewelry, handbags–all exquisite and perfectly suited to her tastes, clearly chosen with care
At this thought, Evelyn silently cursed herself. Why was she even thinking about that jinx?
“We’re here, Mrs. Johnson.”
As soon as Evelyn stepped inside the house, Tina approached her, noticing the elegantly wrapped box in her hand. She assumed it contained something nice.
