Paul could fire anyone in the lab with a mere sentence. 

Yet, until now, Silas and the others had never considered the possibility that one of them. would leave the lab under the pretext of “termination of employment“. 

Sandy was stunned. The word “firing” had come out of nowhere. What did “due to certain reasons” even mean? 

She recalled that Elizabeth had taken sick leave, so she asked tentatively, “…Is Lizzy’s condition serious?! 

But even so; it didn’t seem like a valid reason to fire her. It was hard to believe Paul would fire Elizabeth just because of her health problems. 

Silas nodded and asked, “Can you share the reason behind this decision?” 

Paul didn’t answer. Instead, he said, “Elizabeth’s current project will be temporarily transferred to Bryan. Make sure the transition is done quickly.” 

From the moment Paul started speaking to when he suddenly mentioned his name, Bryan was left completely blindsided. His mind went blank, and he couldn’t process anything. 

It felt as though his ears were stuffed, which drowned out all the other sounds around him. He could only hear Paul’s words; “termination of employment“-repeating in his mind. 

Bryan finally snapped out of his daze when Sandy, sitting next to him, tugged his arm under 

the table. 

Still confused, he turned to Paul. “…Dr. Jefferson, why? 

Paul gave him the same look as before. Without saying a word, he strode away and left behind a room full of shocked and confused faces. 

The atmosphere in the lab was unusually depressing for the rest of the morning. 

Bryan picked up his phone several times. He wanted to call Elizabeth and find out what had happened. But each time, he put it down again. 

Did she know about this? And if she didn’t, how was he supposed to tell her? 

Although Paul hadn’t explicitly stated anything, Bryan already had a vague sense of what had happened.
