I pushed through the doors of the packhouse, my heart racing. The air inside was thick with tension. Sara's voice, sharp and wounded, echoed down the hall, and I could hear Adonis, his booming tone rising and falling like he was trying to get a handle on his emotions. But that was the problem—he never could when it came to Sara.
“You are banished and I don’t want a daughter like you. I already have one.” Adonis’ voice came through.
"Why, Adonis?" I heard her shout. "Why was it always her?"
I rushed forward, finding them in the main room, facing off like two storms about to collide. Sara’s face was flushed with anger, her eyes blazing. Adonis stood tall, his hands trembling as they gripped the back of a chair, the weight of his guilt bearing down on him.
Ryan caught my eye from the corner of the room, standing quietly, watching the unfolding disaster with that steady calm of his. He gave me a small nod, urging me forward.
"It was never—" Adonis started, but Sara cut him off.
"No! Don’t you dare say it was to protect me," Sara spat, her voice trembling with hurt. "You didn’t protect me, Adonis. You pushed me aside, like I was nothing."
I stepped in between them, feeling the heat of their emotions swirl around me. "Enough," I said, my voice firmer than I felt. "This isn’t helping anyone. Adonis, Sara—both of you need to stop and listen."
Sara shot me a look that could have burned a hole through me. "Stay out of this, Ella. You’ve always been his favorite. He’s always chosen you over me, so what do you even know about being ignored?"
Her words stung, more than I wanted to admit. I opened my mouth to respond, but Adonis’s voice broke through, raw and hoarse.
"I never meant for it to be like this," he said, his voice cracking. He looked at Sara, his eyes filled with regret. "Sara, I didn’t forget you. I couldn’t—"
"You did," Sara snapped, stepping closer, her voice thick with emotion. "Ever since Ella showed up, it’s like I disappeared. Like I was never enough. Do you even realize how that feels?"
Adonis faltered, his eyes filling with tears. He looked older suddenly, as if the years of holding everything in were finally catching up to him. "I was trying to do what was right. I didn’t know what else to do after I found her, after all those years."
"You found her," Sara echoed bitterly. "And lost me. You can’t even see that, can you?"
Ryan cleared his throat quietly, moving toward Sara. "Sara, it wasn’t about forgetting you."
She whipped around, her anger spilling over onto him. "Don’t. Just don’t defend him. I’ve heard enough excuses."
I took a step forward, placing a hand on Sara’s shoulder. She tensed beneath my touch, but she didn’t shake me off. "Sara, this isn’t about choosing one of us over the other. I know it feels like that, but—"
"Feels like?" Sara’s voice trembled, tears filling her eyes. "It was like that, Ella. You were his prize. I was just the girl left behind, always in the shadow of the ‘perfect daughter’ he never knew existed."
The pain in her voice cut through me. "I’m not perfect, and neither is he."
Adonis let out a shaky breath, his shoulders slumping. "Sara, I was afraid. Afraid of losing you too. I thought if I could fix things with Ella, it would make everything right. I didn’t realize I was pushing you further away."
