I knew that everyone was waiting for my 18th birthday for me to shift. And before I knew it, my birthday was upon us.
I didn’t want anyone to make a fuss over it so I hung out with the twins and Wendy that day but by night the twins took me to the woods on the other side of town. Not the one near their house.
We sat there in the woods, feeling the magical powers of the woods and letting it seep into us. The twins thought it might help, so we sat on the ground leaning up against a fallen tree and we were staring up trying to see the moon through the trees and chatting briefly.
Suddenly, I sat up when I started feeling something weird happening.
I looked down at my arms and I could see white fur starting to sprout on my arms in patches, some on my legs as well. But that was about it. It was strange.
“How do you feel?” Tristan asked.
“I don’t know. It’s weird.” I said.
“Do you feel like you’re in pain?” Nathan asked.
“No. There’s no pain.” I said. And Nathan looked over at Tristan.
“That’s not right.” Nathan said. And Tristan nodded.
I looked at my hands in front of me but they stayed the same and I saw the patches of fur sprouting on my arms and then it would disappear. Only for more to come up on different parts of my arms and then disappear again.
“What is this?” I asked, concerned.
“We don’t know.” Nathan said.
We were sitting out there for hours, watching this weird fur appearing and disappearing on my skin before it just stopped altogether.
I didn’t shift. It looked like I was trying to, but something was stopping it.
I was really disappointed after that and the guys were doing all they could to cheer me up. They knew that it was going to happen. It’s just not going to happen tonight.
“Come on. Let’s just go home.” I said, standing up.
We walked back to the car and started driving home.
The guys never said it, but I could see the worry on their faces as well. I knew that they didn’t know what was going on but no one was more disappointed than me. I hated that I couldn’t shift and Ava was just as disappointed. She really thought this was going to be the night.
How am I meant to help with this pack’s curse if I don’t have a damn wolf? It doesn’t make any sense to me.
It was hard enough and there was enough stress put on me knowing that I was the one that was meant to break the curse. But if I can’t even shift, I was afraid that my twins were going to suffer this curse for the rest of their lives and I wouldn’t be able to do anything about it.
When we got back to the house Wendy was waiting for us and she ran over to us when we pulled up.
She was looking really excited and I didn’t want to be rude, but I couldn’t deal with this right now.
I walked inside the house and went upstairs to our room but I saw the guys stay outside talking to Wendy.
I couldn’t hear what they were saying but I knew that they were telling Wendy that nothing had happened and it was very disappointing to everyone.
She went back to her house and the twins came inside.
“Wendy told us to tell you that she’s really sorry. But you’re still her best friend. Even if you don’t have a wolf.” Nathan said. And I nodded my head.
I was sitting on the reading nook under the window and I looked back outside at the moon.
Tristan walked over and sat next to me, wrapping his arms around me.
“It’ll be alright. We’ll figure out what’s going on. I mean, you do have a wolf. There’s no reason why you can’t shift.” He said.
“The wolfsbane.” I said. And he pulled his head away from me to look me in the face.
I guess they hadn’t thought of that.
“The doctor said that the wolfsbane could interfere with your shifting.” Nathan said.
“Yeah. And I think the witch has gotten what she wanted. She doesn’t want the curse lifted. So, she’s blocked it.” I said.
Tristan rested his chin on my shoulder and he tightened his grip around me. Letting me know that he wasn’t going anywhere.
“Well, it was a good birthday up until now. I don’t know why I expected it to be any different.” I said.
“Well, Wendy got you some awesome presents. And I hope you like what we got you.” Nathan said, showing me the white gold wolf necklace.
“I love my presents. It’s the first time I’ve ever gotten birthday presents.” I said.
“Are you serious?” Tristan asked.
