Will You Be My Girlfriend?
She had been concerned her colleagues might turn up their noses at the cheap deli sandwiches, but they were eveni nicer than she imagined.
Lexi gave her a literal pat on the back. ‘Good job. It’s always nice to be appreciated.
Kira smiled. “Thank you, Lexi, for showing me the ropes. I couldn’t have done any of this without you!
‘Don’t mention it.”
The two of them spent the day going over the investment risk analysis report.
Kira was drained at the end of the long day.
She headed into the pantry for a drink of water.
*You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey.
Bob Dylan’s slightly nasal voice alerted Kira to an incoming call.
Liam Cane.
‘Hello. Kira answered the call with some reluctance.
“What time do you get off work?‘ Liam’s languid voice came on the line. ‘I’ll pick you up for dinner.”
“Um, I don’t remember us making any plans for dinner,”
Kira was a little unnerved by the man’s persistence.
‘You said another time in your text yesterday, right? This is another time. Come on, you owe me one. I’m not taking no for an answer. Where’s your office? I’ll come and pick you up.”
The thought of Liam showing up in his flashy Bentley outside the office building made Kira shudder.
She would be drowning in gossip if anyone saw her get into that car.
“Uh, Mr Cane, I appreciate the invitation, but I’m not sure I can make it tonight. Perhaps we could resched
*You have to work tonight?‘
tim.no.
“Um, no.”
“Have you had dinner?”
“No.”
“Then why can’t you grab a bite with me?”
The question shot out before Kira had time to think it through. ‘Mr Cane, are you asking me out on a date?‘
Silence on the other end of the line.
Kira winced, wishing she could take it back.
She’d asked it on the spur of the moment.
Her brain was overloaded with work, and she was getting tired of having to think up excuses to turn him down.
Liam Cane had helped her out several times, for which she was grateful.
But that didn’t mean she had to go out with him.
Besides, Kira had the feeling that the man was approaching her with an ulterior motive, though she wasn’t sure what he hoped to get from her.
Liam was quiet.
Kira’s question had come out of left field.
He didn’t expect she would be so blunt.
He had planned to play the long game.
Approach her, get close to her, make her fall for him, and then enjoy the look on Austyn’s face when he knew his wife was sleeping with Liam.
But since she’d asked him straight out….
Liam chuckled. ‘Yes, I’m asking you out on a date. Would you like to be my girlfriend?‘
“Stop
pullin
‘Stop pulling my leg, Mr Cane,‘ Kira said, knitting her brows. ‘It’s not funny at all.‘
‘It wasn’t a joke. I’m serious.”
“Why?”
Kira was genuinely puzzled.
What did he see in her?
They obviously moved in different circles, and they barely knew each other.
‘Call it love at first sight,‘ he said.
Kira wash
Kira wasn’t convinced.
On the contrary, she was a little offended.
To her, love at first sight was just a more polite way of saying lust.
She was by no means ugly, but heads didn’t turn when she walked down the street.
His answer only convinced her that he was up to something.
When he didn’t hear a reply, Liam said, ‘Anyway, I just want to put it out there. No pressure. But Kira, I’m serious. T really do like you. And I’m confident that once you get to know me, you’ll learn that I’m not a difficult man to love. If you choose to be with me, I can give you everything you want. Money, power, status, whatever it is.‘
Kira didn’t know what to say to that.
Then Liam added something he thought might sweeten the deal. ‘And your father. I can find him the best doctor money can buy. There’s a medical centre overseas that specialises in treating patients in a vegetative state. I can get your father in there. With a full team of dedicated medical professionals and round–the–clock care, he stands a much better chance of waking up one day.‘
Kira felt a chill running down her spine. ‘You ran a check on me?‘
‘Sorry, I didn’t mean to pry. Remember that day I ran into you at the hospital? You looked so sad. I just wanted to know if there was anything I could do to help, so I asked around. That’s when I learned about your father.‘
Liam’s voice grew gentler. ‘Kira, you should think about it. I can fly your father out today and get him to the medical centre by the end of tomorrow. He’ll have access to treatments not available in the country.‘
Kira fell silent.
She was about to say no to Llam and hang up when he mentioned her father.
Her feelings about Austyn’s cheating aside, she would hold up her end of the bargain as long as she was married to
him.
And that included remaining faithful as his wife.
There was no way she could agree to go out with Liam.
But Liam mentioned her father.
Doctor Morrison, her father’s attending physician, did once lament that certain drugs which might help her father were unavailable in the country.
He also mentioned, in passing, that a clinical trial abroad for patients with disorders of consciousness seemed to produce some promising results.
Kira gripped her phone.
She had to admit, she was tempted.
The Banana Or The Tomatoes
Elsie called Kira at six pm and told her Austyn had not returned to the villa.
‘Got it. Thank you, Elsie.”
Kira said she was going to have dinner with coworkers and hung up in a hurry.
She knew the housekeeper was trying to ask her to call Austyn, maybe find out where he was and if he was coming home tonight.
But Kira didn’t wan
Want to.
She had too much on her mind right now.
She called Giana.
Forty–five minutes later, they met up at Goldleaf, a family restaurant.
Kira ordered honeyed pork ribs and pomfret with salted black bean sauce for her, braised beancurd, herbal chicken soup, and signature porridge for Giana.
‘Why can’t I have the pork ribs?‘ Giana protested.
“The doctor said you should keep off solid food that’s hard to chew.”
Giana sipped at her lime juice and watched Kira down half a can of beer in one gulp.
“That’s enough,” she said when Kira cracked open her second can. ‘Stop drinking so much alcohol on an empty stomach. You’ve barely touched your food.‘
She took away the can. ‘Now can you tell me what’s weighing on your mind?”
Kira had called Giana wanting to tell her about Liam and his offer to help her father.
But she’d had the better part of an hour to reflect, and she’d made a quick stop at the hospital to see her father.
She would be lying if she said she wasn’t tempted, but after the initial shock wore off, she knew it was unrealistic.
She was Austyn’s wife.
There was no way she could just leave him and hop on a plane with another man.
Besides, she knew nothing about this medical centre Liam mentioned.
Could it really help her father?
In other words, could she really trust Liam?
She had made up an excuse and ended the call abruptly.
Hopefully, Liam got the message.
“So?” Glana prompted. ‘Is this about your husband?‘
Kira nodded. “The man could be so petty. He hasn’t come home for two days, all because of a teeny–tiny offence on my
part.”
“What did you do?
“I accidentally hurt his manhood.”
Glana almost choked on her chicken soup.
Kira handed her a tissue and stroked her back. ‘Oh, and he knew I took Kayleigh’s cheque. I don’t know how he found out, but he was royally pissed.‘

Kira sighed. He didn’t speak to me for the entire day. I called him last night, you know, to try and patch things up. He invented some excuse about a client meeting and stayed out all night.”
She snorted. ‘But I think he was just fooling around with another woman. What kind of client meeting lasts all night?‘ Giana sucked in a deep breath. That’s a lot of information to get in thirty seconds. Give me a minute.‘
After she digested the news, she said, ‘First things first–you hurt your husband’s private parts?‘
Kira gave a sheepish shrug. ‘It was just a gentle squeeze. For a second.”
“The testicles or the penis?‘
