Kira gripped her phone.
The doctor’s words delivered a punch straight to her heart.
“I…I see. Sorry to have bothered you. You guys…have fun.!
She was about to hang up.
She wasn’t sure if she could keep herself together if the doctor filled her in on more details of Austyn’s plans for tonight.
Plans with another woman.
I Can’t Have Feelings For Her
I Can’t Have Feelings For Her
‘Is that my phone? Austyn asked. ‘Who is it?‘
‘It’s your lovely young wife.‘ Jesse handed over the phone. ‘She’s just calling to wish us a fun time tonight.”
Austyn shot Jesse a dirty look. ‘What nonsense have you been feeding her again?”
Jesse laughed, then he grabbed the hostess next to him and planted a loud, sloppy kiss on her face. ‘Not nonsense. Just
the truth.”
Austyn kicked Jesse on the shin. ‘Piss off.”
‘Ow!‘ Jesse feigned pain. ‘I’m hit! I need a nurse over here!!
The hostess giggled.
Kira listened to the commotion with a blank face.
‘Kira.‘ Austyn’s voice came on the line.
‘Yes.‘ She quickly collected herself.
“Why are you calling so late?”
Was there a hint of annoyance in his voice?
“Nothing,‘ she said quickly. “When you didn’t come back at eleven, Elsie got worried, so she asked me to call you.”
“Is that so?‘
‘Yes.‘ Kira put a smile in her voice. ‘You know how much she likes to worry.”
“What a
about you?‘ Austyn got up and walked to a corner, out of earshot.
“What about me what?‘
‘Are you worried about me?”
‘1, uh…Doctor Chase said you have a lady to keep you company, so there’s nothing for me to worry about. I was just about to-
‘He lied.‘
“What?”
‘I’m here with a client. A male client. Jesse tagged along. I was talking with the client and didn’t notice the phone ringing. Jesse answered it without my knowledge. Whatever he told you, it’s not true.‘
Kira didn’t speak, still trying to process the information.
“You don’t believe me?‘ Austyn raised an eyebrow.
“No, it’s not that. Of course I believe you.‘
There was no need for him to lie to her.
She just didn’t expect that he would bother to give her such a detailed explanation.
“So, now can you tell me why you called?‘
“Uh, I, I told you, it was Elsie who wanted–
“Tell Elsie I’m not coming back tonight.”
“Why not?” Kira asked, a little too quickly.
“Why do you care?”
I Cant Have Feelings For Her
“I don’t! I’m asking for Elsie.‘
‘Elsie doesn’t pry into my affairs.”
‘Still, you should give a reason. What kind of client meeting lasts all night?‘
‘Are you asking for Elsie? Or for yourself?”
Kira paused.
“Fine. I’m asking for myself.”
‘So you’re worried about me?”
‘Yes, I’m worried about you. Happy now?”
Austyn smiled.
‘So?‘ Kira prompted. ‘Are you coming back tonight?‘
‘No.‘
“Why not?” She thought he was joking just now. ‘Are you spending the night with another one of your mistresses again?
‘Are you jealous?‘
Austyn nodded at Avery, who was pointing at his watch, ‘I’m not spending the night with a woman, but I do have a
business matter to deal with. Don’t wait up for me.”
‘Don’t worry. I won’t.‘
Kira hung up.
She tossed her phone on the bed and lay back, spreadeagled.
Austyn promised he was not spending the night with a woman, but Kira still felt uneasy.
Ever since that night in the study, where he tore up the cheque from Kayleigh, he had been keeping his distance from
her.
She could tell
But he didn’t sound mad on the phone just now.
Then what was it?
If he wasn’t angry with her, why was he staying away from the villa with a flimsy excuse?
Maybe she was just a lowly intern, unacquainted with the way high–level business meetings were conducted.
But try as she might, she could not imagine what kind of client would request an all–night meeting.
Austyn pocketed his phone and returned to his seat.
‘Come…come on. We have a lot to cover,‘
Avery’s speech was beginning to slur.
He’d imbibed rather freely tonight.
He had one hand on the contract and the other on the thigh of a hostess.
‘Can you still stand?‘ Austyn waved a hand in front of him.
“Su…sure. Come…Time is m…money, my friend!!
“I think we’re done here for today. Austyn stood up.
Given the state he was in, Avery was not going to remember whatever terms they negotiated tonight.
“Take him back to the hotel,‘ Austyn said to one of Avery’s assistants, who nodded. ‘Don’t let him drive.”
“Yes, Mr McCarthy.‘
Avery insisted he could stand, but bumped into the karaoke screen when he tried to walk
