Kira couldn’t quite recall what happened next. 

Georgina might have stirred. 

Or was it Gideon? 

Kira didn’t know. 

When she came out of her trance, she found herself on the esplanade. 

She and Gideon used to come here for an evening stroll. 

She was still holding the envelope in one hand, but her other hand was cakeless. 

Kira sat on a bench and cried her eyes out. 

Pedestrians stopped, pointed and whispered. 

She didn’t notice. 

When the sun went home, so did she. 

Dad would be off work soon. 

Kira rushed home and washed her face, hoping Dad wouldn’t notice her puffy eyes. 

Or if he did, she could say those were tears of joy at her admission into Stamford. 

When she reached home, Gideon’s bedroom door was shut. 

The chocolate praline cake was found in his room that evening. 

Gideon had disappeared. 

Dad was so worried that he wanted to call the police. 

But then he got a phone call. 

After he came back into the room, he told Kira to forget about Gideon. 

‘He’s not worth your tears, honey,‘ Dad said. 

A half–naked Gideon lying in bed with Georgina was the last image Kira had of him. 

Until now. 

Kira hopped into the bathroom and washed her face again. 

She didn’t understand. 

What was Gideon doing here? 

His appearance was just as sudden as his disappearance. 

Did he come to Stamford on business, happen to remember bis ex–girlfriend, and decide to drop by for a visit? 

“What do you think, Dad?‘ Kira asked her unconscious father. 

A nurse must have given him a shave today. 

His face was clean.
