grew up with Young Master Liam,‘ Charles said. 

Kira hid her surprise. 

Charles Wadsworth looked at least a decade older than Liam. 

But she said nothing and waited for him to continue. 

‘Young Master didn’t have a happy childhood. Nor did he receive much affection, despite being the second son of the powerful McCarthy family. Do you know why?” 

Kira wanted to say that was none of her business, 

But she was afflicted with the same weakness that killed the cat. 

‘Why?‘ she asked in spite of herself. 

‘Young Master took his last name from his mother. Ms Cane didn’t find out she was a mistress until Young Master turned ten years old. The discovery shocked and depressed her. She just wasted away after that. She passed away when Young Master was twenty.” 

Kira listened, open–mouthed. 

When she learned Austyn and Liam were half brothers, she’d thought it was because their father had two marriages. 

If Liam’s mother was a mistress, that would mean Liam was born out of wedlock. 

He was a…bastard child. 

Kira would have never guessed it, given how confident Liam always appeared. 

“Young Master was brought to live with the McCarthy family when he was just a little boy. Ms. 

Cane was bedbound and didn’t have the energy to care for him or protect him. Young Master grew up in a home without love. He hates the McCarthy name with a passion. Including Young Master Austyn.‘ 

Kira shuffled her feet. 

She felt uncomfortable listening to Liam’s dark and troubled past.
