‘If you care so much about me, why did you leave me four years ago?‘ 

The question had been buried in her mind like a thorn. 

It could be ignored but not dislodged. 

Gideon left her without leaving behind so much as a note. 

He must have called her father later on, but Dad never told her what Gideon said in the call. 

And Gideon never called her. 

Gideon raised a hand, trying to wipe away her tears. 

The effort made him groan in pain. 

‘Don’t move!‘ Kira got him to lie back down. ‘You don’t want to start bleeding again.‘ 

I promise not to move if you promise not to cry 

‘I’m not crying.‘ Kira wiped away the tears with the back of her hand. 

She took a deep breath. 

The dull ache in her heart was a good sign. 

It meant she was close to getting the thorn out. 

She had not dared touch it in the past. 

But it was time to stop running away from her pain. 

If Gideon never came back, she would have buried memories of him along with the question. 

But since he was here right now, it was time to settle this once and for all. 

Kira wanted a clean break. 

She wanted to be rid of all her emotional baggage, to say goodbye to her past, and to move on with her life. 

‘Kira, you know my last name is Garner.‘ Gideon’s voice was a scratchy whisper. 

Kira nodded. 

She saw a pitcher on a bedside table and poured out a glass of water for Gideon. 

She knew that now. 

When Gideon came to live with her in Milton, he’d only given his first name.

‘My family is…‘ Gideon tried and failed to find the right word. ‘I guess “dysfunctional” might be an understatement. The Garners are a big clan with hundreds of years of history in Ourhlana. It’s a family ruled by the law of the jungle. Whoever is the smartest, strongest, or most ruthless gets to be the head of the pack. I wasn’t any of those things back then, so I was tossed out. I wandered around for a while. Eventually made my way to Milton. Then I met you.” 

The memory brought a smile to his pale lips. ‘The four years spent with you and your dad are the happiest time of my life. I got to know what a real family is like.‘ 

His voice took on a hard edge. ‘I was forced to leave you.‘ 

Kira waited. 

She knew there was more to the story. 

‘My mother, she…she was killed. I had to return to Ourhlana to find out who did this. I’m sorry 

I left in such a hurry, Kira. My mind was such a mess when I received the news. I wasn’t thinking straight.” 

He pleaded with his eyes. ‘I’m sorry I had to leave you, Kira, but there was no choice. My mother was the only one in the family who ever truly loved me. I couldn’t rest till I found out who did this to her.” 

He took Kira’s hand in his. 

She was struck dumb by the news. 

Gideon left on the same day she walked in on him sleeping with Georgina. 

She’d always thought he absconded because he was ashamed to face her. 

Gideon seldom talked about his family. 

He mentioned his mother occasionally and never said a word about his father. 

Kira was under the impression that Gideon was an orphan. 

She would have never guessed the true reason for his leaving if he didn’t tell her. 

“Then your mom…” 

‘It was to 

too late when I got the news.‘ Gideon smiled ruefully. ‘Milton is three thousand kilometres away from Ourhlana. By the time l’got back, she was already buried. I didn’t even get to attend her funeral.‘ 

Kira didn’t know what to say.
