Gideon nodded. ‘Did Gwen tell you about the tracker?”
‘She did. She said her friend would come and save her as soon as the tracker was activated. I just didn’t expect that friend to be you.”
Gideon realised with a start that Gwen and Kira had spent several hours together in the
warehouse.
‘Did, uh, did Gwen tell you anything?”
‘Like what?‘ Kira was confused.
She’s Outlived Her Usefulness
Back then, Kira didn’t know Gideon and Miss Reyes knew each other.
‘Nothing, just asking.‘ Gideon breathed out.
‘She didn’t tell me anything,‘ Kira said. ‘I mean, other than the tracker.”
‘Oh, okay.”
That was good news.
Gideon was afraid Gwen might have blabbed about their relationship.
He didn’t want Kira to know that.
“You should rest. Martin, please keep an eye on him.’
“Where are you going?‘ Both Gideon and Martin asked at the same time.
Kira was thinking about Austyn.
She’d stayed here for almost two hours, way past the thirty minutes she’d promised him.
He was probably foaming at the mouth right now.
Gideon tried to sit up in bed. ‘Are you leaving again?”
Kira knitted her brows. ‘Can you please just stay still? You don’t want the wound to rupture.”
Gideon had bandages wrapped all over his upper body.
He looked like a living mummy.
Kira was surprised he could even move.
“This is the ICU,‘ she said. ‘It’s not like I can camp out here. I’ll come and see you in the morning. Maybe bring you breakfast, if the doctors say you can eat solid food.”
Gideon could ask Martin to stop her, but she would probably be pissed if he did that.
Gideon pursed his lips. ‘I want buttermilk pancakes, made by you‘
Kira nodded patiently. ‘If the doctors approve.‘.
‘Are you going home?”
‘Uh–huh.‘ Kira looked away and fibbed.
‘Martin, drive her back‘
‘Un, no thanks. He should stay here with you. I can get a taxi.‘
Gideon didn’t insist.“Be careful.‘
‘Got it.”
Kira left.
‘Martin, call Gwen,‘ Gideon said as soon as the door closed. ‘Tell her to leave Stamford immediately. Get the first flight out. Don’t ever show her face in front of Kira again. Got it?‘
‘But Young Master…”
‘Do it now!‘
“Yes, Young Master.‘
Martin sighed and went out to make the call.
‘Miss Reyes.‘
‘Martin, how’s Young Master doing? Is everything okay?”
“Yes, Young Master’s fine. Are you, uh, back at the house?”
‘Yes. I’m making chicken soup. It should be ready in a couple of hours. Do you want to come here to pick it up, or should I bring it to the hospital?‘
“That’s, um, nice. Listen, uh, Miss Reyes, Young Master has asked me to tell you that, uh, that you should head back to Ourhlana today. I’ll book the plane ticket for you.‘
Silence on the other end of the line.
