Austyn was drained of all strength. 

He couldn’t tear his eyes away from the closed door of the operating theatre. 

The surgery wasn’t done yet, but life as Austyn knew it was over. 

His marriage with Kira was over. 

He couldn’t imagine the look on her face when she received the news of Leland’s death. 

He would rather die than be the one who broke her heart. 

Austyn clenched his fists. 

He had to pull himself together.

revenge for Leland. 

Suddenly, urgent footsteps came from downstairs and were soon heard on this floor. 

They grew louder and nearer. 

Austyn turned around. 

His blood froze when he saw Kira sprinting down the hallway. 

He shot to his feet and pushed his way past the guards

Kira broke free from his embrace. 

Her eyes were as red as his. 

Her hair was dishevelled. 

Traces of tears stained her cheeks. 

She gripped Austyn’s hands. ‘Where’s my father?” 

Austyn swallowed hard. 

He looked away. “Kira…” 

She grabbed the front of his shim and yelled in his face. ‘Austyn McCarthy! Where is my father” 

Austyn forced himself to look at her. ‘Kira, come with me. 

He moved towards the stairs. 

“No!” She grasped his shoulders and shook them bard. ‘Austyn, I’m asking you for the last time, where is my father? 

she looked up at him with brittle hope in her eyes. 

Just one word from him would either relndle that hope or extinguish it completely. 

Austyn felt as if he was standing on the edge of a precipice. 

One word was enough to push him over into the abyss. 

He couldn’t utter a sound. 

“Austyn!” Kira screamed at the top of her lungs. TELL ME!” 

His lips trembled. 

Austyn led through his teeth. “He’s..he’s fine. I asked Kai to transfer him to 

o another hospital come with me. I’ll..I’ll take you to see him.”

Kira was dazed. 

She loosened her grip on his shoulders. 

She stared at him stupidly.

Austyn nodded, desperate for her to believe the lie. “He’s fine. He’s just resting. Come with me,‘ 

He took her hand carefully.
