“Will you stay with me?” Austyn asked. 

Kira nodded. 

The kids would be coming this afternoon. 

She would stay here and wait for them. 

She sat down on the chair Luca vacated and picked up her phone. 

Austyn watched her. 

Kira texted Isabel to ask about the twins. 

She looked up five minutes later and, sure enough, Austyn’s eyes were still open. 

He had not stopped staring at her. 

“What are you doing? 

Austyn spread out both hands. ‘I can’t sleep‘ 

Kira was at a loss for words. 

Austyn beckoned at her ‘Come here and talk to me.‘ 

“You shouldn’t be talking, Kira said, ‘You should be resting

“About the past four years.” 

Kai had given him the rough sketches, but he still wanted to hear it from Kira. 

It couldn’t have been easy, raising two kids by herself and juggling work at the same time,

“What’s the point of telling you now? You don’t remember me. It’ll be like hearing a stranger’s story.” 

‘But the marriage certificate proves you are my wife. 

‘It’s just a piece of paper.‘ Kira shrugged. ‘Besides, you are going to get a new wife soon, aren’t you?” 

Austyn thought he detected a hint of bitterness in her words. 

He knew whom she was referring to, of course. 

But Hira didn’t know that he would never get a new wife. 

Maybe Jason Taylor would have married Gwen 

But Austyn McCarthy only had one wife, and she was Kira Hewitt. 

His eyes twinkled with amusement. “Are you jealous? 

Kira rolled her eyes at him.

A harsh ringtone interrupted his thoughts. 

Kira fetched his phone from a table. 

The caller ID onscreen sald Gwen. 

‘Your fiancée. Kira tossed the phone at Austyn. 

She headed for the door. ‘I’ll give you some privacy,” 

She disappeared from sight before Austyn could say anything 

He watched the empty doorway and sighed.
