Bedmates Soulmates novel Chapter 88

He’s Found His Treasure

Kira played rock music on her phone at full volume, but the battery soon died

She tried to tough it out by counting sheep, then counting numbers backwards, then reciting pages from Leon Festinger’s A Theory Of Cognitive Dissonance.”

Nothing worked

She remained wide awake for as long as the rain kept pouring down

When she regained consciousness, the sky had cleared

The sun had reported for work and was dutifully casting its warm rays over the earth

Orioles in trees celebrated the arrival of dawn with their flutelike songs

But Kira was in no mood to appreciate the music

She had not had a good night’s sleep for two days, ever since Austyn stayed away from the villa

Sitting at her workstation, she kept nodding off and almost knocked her forehead against the desk

When she came back from the restroom and yawned again, Lexi rolled her chair over and whispered,Kira, you can’t keep going like this. You can have too much of a good thing, you know.”

What? Kira gazed at her colleague stupidly

She was suffering from brain fog

Living like Catherine the Great,Lexi said

Kira didn’t understand

Do the dance with no pants.”

Kira continued staring

Having too much sex! Lexi hissed, rolling her eyes

Kira’s mouth opened

Her colleague had gotten the wrong idea

Flustered, she hastened to explain in an undertone, It’s not what you think. I didn’t sleep well. That’s all.‘

Come on, we’re all adults here. There’s no shame in talking about sex.”

I know, but it’s really not that.”

Then what’s the matter? Couldn’t sleep?‘

Kira nodded

Relationship trouble? Argument with your BF?‘

No, not that. The storm was too noisy last night. I couldn’t fall asleep.”

Kira didn’t have a BF

Austyn was not her boyfriend

He was her employer, benefactor, and legal husband

But not a boyfriend who belonged with her

Hoa Foogu His Treasure

Last night’s phone call was a stark reminder

Ah, but you didn’t deny the part about the BF, Lexi observed Kira’s face. So you do have a boyfriend

How I envy you college kids,Vanessa, seated across from them, chimed in. You have time to go on dates after work. Unlike us. We are chained to our desks and slave away in the office. I can’t remember the last time someone took me out for a nice dinner.”

What about that guy from the office across the street? Lexl asked. You said he was making eyes at you at the coffee shop. Did he ask you out?‘

If only,Vanessa pouted. I made three coffee runs yesterday, but he was nowhere to be seen. He didn’t even leave his number after our chat last time.”

Maybe he was in a rush. Don’t worry, you’ll get to see him eventually”

Vanessa and Lexi started exchanging opinions on men they’d seen at work and forgot about Kira

Kira, grateful for Vanessa’s timely intervention, forced her mind back to the work on hand

or you could give him a call,Lexi said. ‘Men are turned on by women who take the initiative.”

Really? Vanessa sounded doubtful. Won’t he think I’m desperate?‘

Was that what Austyn thought

Kira cast her mind back to the phone call last night

He was giving her the silent treatment

She called him, out of desperation, actually

Did Austyn look at the caller ID with disdain, before handing over his phone to that woman, probably instructing her to get rid of the nuisance caller

Kira had hoped for a warm shoulder to lean on, but she didn’t get that

Instead, she was in for a rude shock

Austyn’s doctor friend was right

She shouldn’t entrust her heart to someone like Austyn

Or her heart would be returned to her, shattered to pieces

Maybe it was a good thing she had not fallen for him

But, was she being honest with herself

If she didn’t care, why was she foaming at the mouth every time she saw or heard him with another woman

Kayleigh, the gorgeous longhaired woman from the hospital, and that woman who answered the phone Jast night…

Kira shook her head

Stop this madness

She threw herself into work and didn’t leave her workstation till half past five

After saying goodbye to Lexi, Kira left the office

3

It was Friday night.”

Kira dialled Glana’s number

They hadn’t seen each other for almost two weeks

A catchup dinner was long overdue

Besides, she dreaded returning to that empty villa for another lonely, nightmarefilled night

The streets were crowded with people out on the town

Kira had to dodge and weave in and out of traffic as she waited for Giana to pick up the call

Less than ten metres away, a black BMW 7601 xDrive had pulled up in front of the traffic light

Gideon was in the front passenger seat

He glanced out the window, absentmindedly running his eyes over the hustling pedestrians
