Betrayal At The Altar (Rachel and David) novel Chapter 742

Chapter 742

Shifting her gaze slightly, Rachel caught a glimpse of a black shirt from the corner of her eye.

One second later, her senses were assaulted by a crisp, wooden fragrance. Her back was pressed tightly against a man’s firm, warm chest.

“Are your injuries better?” Rachel shied away, afraid to get too close because of the wound on his chest.

David wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her into his embrace. He bent down slightly and whispered, “Of course they are. Haven’t I proved it to you yesterday night?”

Rachel Grey was speechless.

His low, suggestive tone reminded her instantly of their indulgence last night.

Her fair cheeks flushed involuntarily.

She suddenly became uncomfortably aware of his warm chest and the heat of his breath against her face. Feeling awkward, she tried squirming her way out of his grasp.

David accommodated her cheerfully. He loosened his grip on her waist slightly and wrapped his broad palm around her cold hand. “It’s getting late. Let’s go back to our room and rest early.”

It was a perfectly ordinary sentence, but after how they indulged each other last night, it sounded like another disguised invitation to Rachel.

Her legs felt a little sore. She cleared her throat and replied calmly, “I’m not sleepy yet. Why don’t you go back to our room and rest first?”

“Are you really not tired, or trying to avoid me deliberately?” David saw through her immediately. He bent down and picked Rachel Grey up bridal style. “I promise I won’t do anything else tonight.”

Ever since she realized that ‘one last time’ meant nothing to David, Rachel no longer believed every word he said.

Seeing that she was struggling to escape, David’s expression became more serious. “Don’t move. Be careful not to hurt my wound.”

Hearing this, Rachel shot him a look that was filled with a mixture of amusement and resentment.

A single message was evident in her eyes. “Only now do you think about your wound!”

David did not say anything. He merely walked towards their bedroom with Rachel in his arms.

Half an hour later, Rachel was laying in David’s arms again.

Seeing that she was tossing and turning in bed, David thought she was worried about the incident with Georgia. Patiently, he explained, “Georgia is not the legitimate daughter of the Walker family. Her mother was a concubine.”

Rachel opened her eyes in surprise and looked at the man laying so close to her.

He was trying to reassure Rachel that she did not need to worry about facing Landon or even the Walker family because of her punishment towards Georgia.

The Walker family would never speak up for an illegitimate daughter born to a concubine.

Besides, Landon was a fair judge of most situations and could separate right from wrong. He knew what he had to do.

Thus, David did not worry that Landon would be biased toward his sister in any way.

“What era are we in now? There’s still a distinction between legitimate children and children of concubines?” Rachel could not help but chuckle. “Does the Landon family still practice the tradition of taking several concubines?”

It was a casual joke, but when Rachel saw the grim smile on David’s face, the grin on her face couldn’t help but fade a little. “You can’t be serious. They still do that?”

“It’s not just the Landon family. The other families also follow that tradition,” David said. “Aureliana has a small population, and each family is involved in many industries. Therefore, having several wives is still allowed here. Why do you think the competition for the successor’s position is so strong in every family? It’s because so many children are involved.”

Hearing this, Rachel could not help but pout. She poked his chest hard with her fingertips and complained in a low voice, “It’s just an excuse for you men to satisfy your selfish desires.”

“Don’t tar all of us with the same brush.” David took her hand and pulled her into his arms. He held her slender waist tightly. “They are them, and I am me.”

Despite understanding his words, Rachel pretended not to. She raised her eyebrows slightly and asked provokingly, “So?”

“So, the position of the Jones family’s mistress is reserved for you alone.”

It was not because she was entitled to that position. However, nobody else deserved it but her.

She would have been entitled to it if the Jones family had chosen her for the role. Nonetheless, she was the only person who was worthy of it.

Rachel’s eyes were filled with a faint smile. “David, I only agreed to your proposal. I don’t belong to you yet.

“Once you agree to my proposal, you’ll belong to me sooner or later.”

With that, he leaned down and kissed her on the lips.

The moment their lips touched, it was as if Pandora’s blind box had been opened. Everything else happened naturally.

Compared to the fiery atmosphere here, the mood was very different somewhere else. When Jennifer heard that Georgia had been expelled from the upper-class circles, disbelief appeared on her face.

Over the years, Georgia had managed to sneak into David’s orbit by following Landon around like a shadow. It would be a lie to say that Jennifer wasn’t jealous.

However, her Clifford family upbringing meant reservedness was deeply engraved into her bones

She knew that she was the future mistress of the Clifford family. Being jealous of another girl would not do, as it would only lower her status.

Georgia had risen high above her station as a concubine’s daughter to become a famous socialite in the top circles. This was due to Landon’s support and David’s willingness to accept her.

Otherwise, with Georgia’s background, she would never have qualified to enter the top social circles.
