Chapter 763
Tom frowned slightly, and a hint of coldness flashed across his eyes. “Is this incident related to him?”
Rachel wouldn’t have known about Yandel’s existence if he wasn’t involved, let alone asking such a question out of the blue.
“It’s nothing. I’m just trying to have a casual talk with you,” Rachel replied honestly, knowing she couldn’t fool her uncle, who had a keen mind. “If something really happened to you, then wouldn’t it be a perfect opportunity for him to take over your position?”
With that statement, she attributed everything to the cutthroat nature of the workplace.
It wasn’t that Rachel was intentionally hiding something, but rather, after a thorough investigation, they couldn’t find any evidence implicating Yandel.
If what Harold said was true, that Yandel was wealthy, influential, and powerful, then his subordinates would naturally be willing to act as his pawns to gain favor.
Even if they knew this incident was related to Yandel, they couldn’t find any leads.
Upon hearing this, Tom remained silent and leaned back in his seat. He stared out the window coldly as the scenery flashed by.
After some time, the car finally arrived at the police station.
After getting off the car, Rachel and Lucas went straight to Warren’s office while a staff led Tom to meet Harold.
The two of them sat facing each other. They were clearly at the same height, but they exuded different auras.
Harold had lost his usual gentle scholar demeanor. He was still wearing the white shirt from the day of the incident, but the corners had already begun to turn yellow because he didn’t change his clothes for several days.
Meanwhile, Tom sat opposite Harold. Although his suit was not meticulously ironed, it still exuded an air of nobility befitting his high position.
He looked at the handcuffs on Harold’s hands, and a faint cold smile. appeared on his lips. “On my way here, I recalled the story of the farmer and the snake, but meeting you this way leaves an even deeper
impression.”
Harold clasped his hands together, expressionless as he lifted his gaze to
meet Tom’s.
Harold’s calm expression made Tom frown slightly. “Did you ever consider that this would be your fate when you framed me?”
“So, did you come here just to watch me suffer or to hear me confess?” Harold let out a soft sigh. “Do you have a cigarette?”
Tom met his gaze and pondered for a moment before slowly standing up. He took a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and handed it to Harold.
“Thanks.” Harold calmly retrieved a cigarette, lit it up, and exhaled a puff of white smoke. He then lifted his eyes to look at Tom. “I don’t regret what I’ve done.”
What had been done was done. Regretting was the act of a coward.
“I must say, destroying yourself for the sake of a woman hardly qualifies you to feel remorse for yourself.” Tom mocked bluntly. “It’s just a pity your now miserable fate doesn’t affect your beloved Yannis’s choice to seek comfort in someone else’s arms.”
At the mention of Yannis, Harold’s face twitched slightly. His fingers. tightened around the cigarette, almost breaking it.
He struggled to control his emotions from showing, but his hand trembled uncontrollably. “It was my doing, and Yannis had nothing to do with this. She’s completely unaware.”
Things had come to this point, yet Harold still obstinately defended Yannis. Tom sneered. “Harold, do you find it amusing to deceive yourself? If it weren’t for someone behind the scenes instructing her, how would she have had the ability to introduce you to Alfredo or come up with such a meticulous plan for you? You must be bewitched by her
Faced with Tom’s accusation, Harold remained silent and continued to smoke his cigarette.
The grayish-white smoke gathered in front of him, obscuring his facial expression.
He knew Tom had high hopes for him and intended to nurture him as his successor. That was why he was so stern with his criticisms.
Tom lowered his gaze and looked down at Harold. His voice was freezingly cold as ice, sending chills down Harold’s spine. “The Johnsons are vengeful. Since you have harmed me, don’t blame me for being merciless when I retaliate!”
Harold slowly raised his eyes. The cold expression on Tom’s face made. him feel somewhat unfamiliar and even a little scared.
He lowered his head to conceal his panic. “Whatever punishment you deem fit, I will accept it.”
He acted shamelessly as if he did nothing wrong.
“Hah! You certainly have a carefree attitude! Indeed, why would anyone bother to invest even a shred of effort into a pawn that has lost its value,” Tom sneered and said pitifully and sarcastically, “There are many ways to torture a person, not just physically and mentally, but also
psychologically. The Johnson family treated you with such respect simply because they saw a bright future for your career. That’s why even your parents’ remains received a generous burial. But how do you think your parents’ remains would be treated if they knew you were rotting in jail?”
Right after Tom finished speaking, Harold crushed the still-burning cigarette between his fingers. The cigarette suddenly broke into two.
He glared at Tom’s back as Tom turned around and left. He gritted his teeth and growled, “I did this all alone. Come at me if you want!”
Upon hearing this, Tom stopped in his tracks. He looked away, the mockery in his eyes disappeared, and he offered a final piece of advice. “Harold, if you want to be evil, be completely evil. Don’t develop feelings for anyone.”
Exiting the interrogation room, Tom strode down the hallway and stopped before a window.
He looked at the distant sky and could not help but smile.
self-deprecatingly.
The moment he stepped into the political arena, he knew he couldn’t afford to be soft-hearted towards those around him, nor were they worthy of his genuine affection.
