"Chase you out? You are the mother of the very man they want to follow their ways. Harming you would only lead to Xavier disliking them more. I don’t believe they would chase you out. They have accepted you," said Selene.
"It is far more complicated now that I have noticed some things. My maiden name will protect me but should I need to get out of sight from others, I will leave my son in your hands for a moment. These days, I am starting to be annoyed with married life," Josephine confessed.
Now she understood why others disliked marriage and preferred to just live with each other until they grew tired of their lover.
"Unfortunately, I am too in love with Nathaniel to let him go just yet. I only need him to stop thinking about Xavier and focus on me. I know that troublesome son of mine is listening to me so I will save the rest of our talk for another day. I hope you would be so kind to meet with me for a stroll around the town one day," said Josephine.
"I would love to and I will convince him to have the guards welcome you in without a fight as long as you are not with his father. If not for a dinner I had planned for us alone, I would welcome you to have dinner now," Selene said, apologetically.
"I couldn’t stay anyway. I need to keep an eye on my husband and his siblings. His brother is fine but be wary of Camilla Blackthorn. There was an incident long ago when she lost her mind and went on a terrible killing spree. I don’t trust she is in her right mind now. That is why I am annoyed Nathaniel sent for her," Josephine sighed.
Josephine never got along with Camilla who misplaced her anger over the years and with the current conflict, Josephine wouldn’t try to be friendly now.
Selene tried to keep up with all the names given to her. "I might need to start a journal of names for those who I should avoid."
"That would be a good start. I will give you more names when we meet. You don’t need to see me off," Josephine said, going to the door by herself. She also needed to talk with Xavier. "Why are you staring at my carriage so intently? Are you planning to surprise me with a new one?"
"No. You’ll be lucky if that carriage wheel doesn’t come off and next time, travel with more than one guard. Be careful- Don’t," Xavier said, grabbing Josephine’s hand to stop her attack on his cheek.
"Why couldn’t you let me enjoy you when you are being such a sweet son? I’m starting to think that you don’t deserve Selene. How does she put up with you? Are you pretending to act well-behaved for her to see?" Josephine wondered out loud. "Thankfully, I haven’t heard about you troubling anyone since she showed up."
"I do not trouble anyone."
"Oh, right. How could I forget? It is your response to the people who trouble you. Darius is at the top of the people quite involved in your life. He is annoying as a fly but please promise me that you will not harm him," Josephine said, not needing this to be added to everything else.
Xavier didn’t respond since he wouldn’t be able to keep the promise. Not when Darius was after Selene.
"What you came to say tonight is nothing new for me. I already guessed what they planned to do and I did speak with them so they would stop showing up. Did you come because you are bored?" Xavier asked, seeing through her visit.
Josephine laughed in response.
"I would be bored too if Selene was focused on gathering the family against someone and ignoring me. You don’t need to be ashamed. If you wanted our company, you could have said that," Xavier said. "But I know you wouldn’t."
Xavier knew his mother’s pride.
