Selene exited the carriage and made her way inside to get a better look now that Ruby and Trevor would not be in her way.

The guards were quick to pull everything from the walls and place it outside.

"I want all the things belonging to Paige packed neatly and set to the side. My battle was never with her," said Selene.

"You can trust her?" Xavier asked, following Selene.

"I don’t know. I simply have to take her word for now. I have never spoken to Paige to know where her heart lies but she left without a fight. Her anger might turn to me and she could want the home back, but for now, she did nothing to me," Selene said, willing to give Paige the benefit of the doubt.

Selene touched the wall, running her fingers against it. "The walls used to be a different colour. There is much to do to get it back as it once was. Do you think the old painters would accept money to recreate our portraits?"

"For the right price they would," Xavier replied.

"It sounds to me that you intend to have threats involved as well. I do not mind as long as you don’t hurt the innocent artist. It is becoming more clear how cruel you need to be to get things done. They only left when violence was used. I will need to be more like you," said Selene.

"I do not want you to be like me. I already like you as you are. You’ve done well today. I mean it," Xavier added, noting her expression as though she did not believe him. "Sometimes it is fine to sit back and let others handle the matter for you. There have been plenty of times I stood back and let my guards handle something for me."

"Besides," Xavier held Selene’s left hand and lifted it to leave a kiss. "I am fond of your kindness toward the people you love. It is rare amongst our kind. Leave the cruelty to me. I am too far gone to have a heart like you do."

Selene frowned. Why would he think such a thing?

"I think you are kind. If no one else has told you then I will. No one who is cruel would do as you have done for me. In your way, you are very kind to the people you care for. At least to me," Selene said, seeing Xavier differently than the town saw him. "They removed it," she noticed another change.

Selene held Xavier’s hand to take him to her old room. "My room was on the second floor. There used to be a big tree with a big branch that I could reach out to climb down and sneak out to play in the garden."

"So, you were a sneaky child," Xavier noted.

Selene laughed. "I do not see it that way. My mother would always spot me first and rather than scold me, she would stay with me in the garden. It was her favourite place to be so my father kept the garden well decorated. I was a well-behaved child."

Xavier disagreed. "If you had to climb a tree to get to the garden then you were being sneaky. It is good to know that between us, you were the troublesome child."

"I was lovely as a child. I liked to be alone so who was there for me to misbehave with? Between us, you were the social butterfly."

"Well, that has changed now. I understand why you prefer to be alone but I don’t want to be so alone that I think of going into a deep slumber. We should make some friends if we can. Since we do not have many friends, what if we start to annoy each other by spending too much time together? Luckily, the estate is big enough to avoid each other," Selene said but she hoped it wouldn’t come to that.
