"What should we get into first? I wouldn’t mind having a drink or two and then doing some shopping after. I have plenty of money to spend and so much trouble I want to get into. You decide," Josephine left the decision to Selene.
Selene was stuck not knowing what to do. There was a sudden realisation that she would need to be the parent by watching Josephine carefully.
"I will do anything that doesn’t have Xavier worried about the state I bring his mother home in. How about we walk around and do whatever catches our eyes? Maybe save the drinking for last or never," Selene suggested.
"Nonsense," Josephine laughed, patting Selene’s leg. "A drink is always needed. Maybe you don’t enjoy it because you didn’t have the good ones. Come," she said, taking Selene’s hand so they could exit the carriage together.
Selene looked to Lucas for him to rescue her. He had been in the carriage the entire time, sitting still like he was part of the carriage.
Lucas shook his head, for once having to ignore Selene’s please. While didn’t want Xavier to be upset with him for not rescuing Selene, the last time Josephine screamed near him, his ears took a long time to recover.
Lucas was waiting for the moment they would confirm Josephine was also some kind of banshee.
Selene was left to deal with Josephine alone. Perhaps it would have been better to stay on the estate. They could get drunk there and not worry about being in danger or Xavier could have another talk with his mother.
Josephine kept her hold on Selene’s hand and searched for where they would go first. "Should we dress up in different attire? Should we match?"
"I think our dresses are perfectly fine. Are you already drunk?" Selene asked though that couldn’t be the case. Why was Josephine suddenly so cheery?
"No. I am not happy when I’m drunk. I have a habit of getting angry and throwing things when I am. Well, so I have been told," Josephine replied. "It was how I learned that my scream can affect a vampire’s hearing."
"Then you definitely shouldn’t drink," Selene concluded. "I like my hearing."
"And you will get to keep it as it is. When there is so much danger all around us, I wouldn’t drink to the point I am out of my mind," Josephine assured Selene. "I simply want to have fun and do things I wouldn’t normally do."
Josephine continued to say, "I have never gotten dressed up to match my husband and son. I certainly never will. Nathaniel would make me hate it and Xavier would strip naked so we don’t look like fools in his words. So, I am left with you. The kind one."
Selene couldn’t help but smile. "Very well. Today is all about having fun. Where can we get dresses fitted for us and wear them now before the day ends?"
"You forgot who you are with now, Selene. I am Josephine Blackthorn and I shall make it happen. I think I will also rid you of your current problem with the women listening to Vivienne. She is the queen but for years many have clung to my word. I will fix it," Josephine promised.
Since she never had a public outing with Selene it might be easy for everyone to assume that she was also not happy with the marriage but that was far from the truth. From now on, Josephine would do whatever was needed to show that Selene had her full support.
"Xavier is made up of two sides. The Blackthorns are half of it and in the eyes of many, they are the most important side but there is another half which will support you. I can guarantee that," said Josephine.
Selene was happy to hear this but there was still some concern. "Your family would easily accept me?"
"My father is the one who makes all the decisions along with our elders and he happens to adore his daughter. What I say will go. I am partially trying to keep myself together so my father doesn’t find out the state of my marriage. Blackthorn or not, he would kill Nathaniel," Josephine shared.
"What has my life become?" Lucas muttered. freewёbnoνel.com
